Lisson Gallery is one of the most influential and longest-running international contemporary art galleries in the world. Since being founded in 1967 by Nicholas Logsdail, it has championed the careers of artists who have transformed the way art was made and presented. These include many important minimal and conceptual artists, such as Sol LeWitt and Richard Long, as well as a whole generation of significant British sculptors from Anish Kapoor and Richard Deacon to Shirazeh Houshiary and Tony Cragg. It continues to support the future of its artists, the legacy of historical figures, the evolving practice of established artists and the wide-ranging potential of emerging and new talents.

Still on view at Lisson London: 'Carmen Herrera: Pulse, Pause, Repeat'.

Spanning the final twelve years of Herrera’s life, the exhibition brings together drawings, paintings and sculpture that reveal the continued vitality of her eight-decade exploration of line, form and colour.

Across four galleries, geometric compositions, saturated colour and black-and-white works demonstrate Herrera’s distinctive balance of precision and play, where repetition, variation and interruption generate a rhythmic sense of movement. The exhibition also highlights her transition from two-dimensional line into sculptural form, reflecting her longstanding interest in architecture and space.

Curated by art historian Marie Perennès, 'Carmen Herrera: Pulse, Pause, Repeat' celebrates the artist’s late work as a vital culmination of a practice that remained restless, rigorous and inventive until the end.

This Saturday, Josh Kline will join Liv Cuniberti, curatorial assistant, and Stephen Kwok, curator of public engagement, at Dia Beacon for a conversation around 'Tehching Hsieh’s One Year Performance 1978–1979 (Cage Piece)' (1978–79).

The event marks the first of 'The Waterline Sessions', a programme accompanying Dia’s long-term exhibition 'Tehching Hsieh: Lifeworks 1978–1999'. The conversation will explore Hsieh’s radical approach to duration, endurance and constraint, considering what it means to spend – or waste – time under contemporary conditions of labour and artistic production.

These themes resonate deeply with Kline’s practice, which examines the structures of work and technology and their influence on contemporary life. Through his exploration of labour, automation and the systems that organise everyday experience, Kline extends Hsieh’s questions around time and endurance into the conditions of the present.

Attendance is free with museum admission.

Closing soon: 'Anish Kapoor' at the Hayward Gallery.

Bringing together sculptures and paintings spanning the artist’s decades-long exploration of space, perception and the senses, the exhibition fills the gallery with immersive works that challenge the viewer’s understanding of scale, material and depth.

From reflective steel sculptures and Vantablack-coated works to seemingly depthless voids and recent visceral paintings, Kapoor creates encounters that shift between the physical and psychological, drawing the viewer into an experience of awe, disorientation and wonder.

The exhibition also features new works, including monumental red installations that appear to turn the world inside out and upside down, continuing Kapoor’s ongoing investigation into the boundaries between the material and immaterial.

Lisson is pleased to announce that Sir John Akomfrah’s five-channel film installation, 'Arcadia' (2023), will premiere at the Natural History Museum, London, on 5 November 2026.

The film explores the Columbian Exchange and the profound environmental and social transformations that followed the movement of people, plants, animals, commodities, technologies, diseases and ideas between the Americas and Afro-Eurasia from the fifteenth century onwards. Across five screens, expansive landscapes are interwoven with archival imagery and scenes of trade and industry, tracing the interconnected histories of migration, colonialism and ecological change.

Accompanied by a soundscape incorporating nature recordings, opera and poetry, 'Arcadia' reflects on the ways in which human histories and changing ecologies have shaped one another.

Opening this Friday: Sarah Cunningham: 'Midnight Sun' at Nottingham Contemporary.

As the first institutional solo exhibition of the late British artist Sarah Cunningham (1993–2024), 'Midnight Sun' brings together early paintings and never-before-seen works from the artist’s studio, foregrounding her exploration of pace, rhythm, night and day. The exhibition also marks a significant homecoming for Cunningham, returning her work to the city where she was born and raised.

Drawing on science fiction literature, ecology, art history and personal experience, Cunningham created imaginary wildernesses and fluid forest-scapes that move between abstraction and figuration. Her paintings explore the interconnectedness of nature and humankind, using colour, gesture and layered surfaces to imagine alternative landscapes and ways of living.

The exhibition traces a movement from darkness into light, beginning with the nocturnal forest of 'The World It Softly Lulls' (2021), moving through 'Via Lucis' (2023), and culminating in the vibrant clearing of 'Starshine and Clay' (2022).

Opening soon: Joyce Pensato at the Falckenberg Collection, Deichtorhallen Hamburg.

‘EYES FOR YOU’ is the first major solo exhibition in Europe dedicated to Pensato since her death in 2019, tracing the development of her practice from early still lifes and Batman drawings to her large-scale black-and-white enamel paintings. The exhibition features works spanning four decades, revealing the evolution of Pensato’s distinctive visual language and her sustained engagement with popular culture.

Through her subversive appropriation of familiar figures including Mickey, Donald, Batman and The Simpsons, Pensato brought the visual language of popular culture into dialogue with the gestural energy of Abstract Expressionism, revealing a less familiar and far more unsettling side to iconic characters.

Winner of the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Prize of the City of Duisburg and the Rhineland Regional Council, Kapoor is presented in the most comprehensive exhibition of his work in Germany in over a decade. Bringing together early pigment works, mirror sculptures and monumental installations, the exhibition traces Kapoor’s sustained investigation into form, colour and material, and their capacity to alter perceptions of space, the body and consciousness.

Created in dialogue with the museum’s modernist architecture, the works hover between the tangible and intangible, presence and absence, light and shadow. Across the exhibition, Kapoor’s sculptures and installations create spaces of encounter that challenge perception and invite reflection on identity, memory and infinity.

Lisson is pleased to announce the unveiling of Ai Weiwei’s ‘Mushrooms’ at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Australia.

Presented as part of the 2026 Neil Balnaves Tallawoladah Lawn Commission, the monumental public artwork comprises 500 cast-iron combat helmets arranged in 10 uniform rows across a 40-metre-long platform overlooking Sydney Harbour. Each helmet is a one-to-one replica cast from a single mould based on a twentieth-century military helmet, including the cushioning of the original design.

The work originated in response to the German government’s donation of 5,000 helmets to Ukraine in 2022, a gesture that was widely questioned at the time. By reproducing objects designed for protection and presenting them collectively as a monumental sculptural form, Ai Weiwei draws attention to the fragility of life and the human cost of conflict.

The title ‘Mushrooms’ also evokes the regenerative qualities of mushrooms, which transform decay into new life, as well as ‘growth in darkness’ and the imagery of nuclear mushroom clouds. The work continues Ai Weiwei’s longstanding engagement with conflict, displacement and the human condition, offering a meditation on peace, resilience and collective responsibility.

Now open, Pulitzer Arts Foundation presents ‘Olga de Amaral: Weaving the Infinite’, a wide-ranging investigation into the work of Colombian artist Olga de Amaral.

Covering more than six decades, the exhibition traces Amaral’s evolution from early loom weavings to monumental fibre works, bringing together celebrated and rarely seen works alongside materials from her commercial design studio, Telas Amaral, and textiles and objects from her personal collection.

Born in Bogotá in 1932, Amaral trained in architectural drafting before studying textiles at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. Since the 1950s, she has expanded the possibilities of weaving through experimental techniques and materials including wool, linen, horsehair, gesso and gold leaf. Her works hover between textile, painting and sculpture, often extending into architectural space through their scale and dimensionality.

Lisson’s presentation features new and historic works by artists from its international roster, spanning painting, sculpture, textiles and photography. The booth brings together works by Olga de Amaral, Huguette Caland, Ryan Gander, Hugh Hayden, Leiko Ikemura, Anish Kapoor, Julian Opie, Dalton Paula, and Hiroshi Sugimoto, among others.

Hugh Hayden is represented on the booth by ‘The blacker the berry the sweeter the juice’ (2026), a new project from the artist’s continued series of skillet works, transforming familiar objects through selection and carving to challenge perceptions of ourselves, others and the environment.

The booth also presents a significant work by Anish Kapoor: ‘Tangerine over Red and Spanish and Pagan Gold’ (2020), a concave mirror that tests the boundaries of spatial perception.

Further highlights include Hiroshi Sugimoto’s ‘Brush Impression 1617 (River)’ (2024) and ‘Opticks 616’ (2023), preceding the artist’s solo exhibition at Lisson New York this September, alongside Olga de Amaral ‘Nébula 16’ and Leiko Ikemura’s ‘Miko’ (2008/2024).
