Lilly Fenichel (1927 – 2016) born in Vienna, Austria, to a Jewish family, fled the N**i invasion in 1939, eventually settling in Hollywood. A student at various art institutions in California, Fenichel’s abstract expressionist paintings from the 1960s and 1970s, influenced by West Coast and New York School styles, garnered attention. Transitioning to New Mexico in 1981, she continued her artistic journey, exploring geometric abstractions and organic forms, earning her a retrospective at the David Richard Gallery in 2014 and posthumous inclusion in the 2023 exhibition Action, Gesture, Paint: Women Artists and Global Abstraction 1940-70 at the Whitechapel Gallery in London.

Through carefully arranged fragments of varying shapes and textures, Fenichel’s dynamic compositions and gestural brushwork emanate irrepressibly vigorous energy, as seen in Collage IV (1961). Calligraphic forms are a common theme throughout Fenichel’s artwork, as was the influence of nature and Colour Field painting on her practice.

"Derek Boshier Drawings," edited by Leslie Jones, traces the artist’s six-decade journey with drawing, a central element of his practice that includes painting, printmaking, film, video, and graphic design.

“It was drummed into our heads that we had to take a drawing book everywhere,” recalls Derek Boshier about his early art school days. Six decades later, drawing remains vital to his work. Using pencil, pen, ink, and black acrylic, he reconfigures found imagery to address social and political issues.

The book explores Boshier’s evolution from British Pop in the 60s to recent graphite pastiches. It delves into recurring imagery like the falling man, jigsaw figure, and profile head, as well as his drawings for album art and mail art. This is the first book since 1982 focused on Boshier’s drawings and includes an essay by Leslie Jones, former Curator of Prints and Drawings at LACMA. Design by Ella Gold.

Spotlighting Betty Parsons’ intuitive use of materials and keen sense of composition, which are showcased here via wooden assemblages that underscore her role as a catalyst for innovation.

Parsons utilized vibrant hues to evoke emotional response and remained committed to abstraction throughout her evolving style, revisiting sculpture in 1965 by experimenting with found materials transformed into painted assemblages reminiscent of buildings, toys, or masks, infusing neglected objects with new life and reflecting her fascination with Native American mysticism, as seen in works like Sound Melody (1977) and Untitled (Pink, Orange and Gray) (c.1970).

Highlighting Helen Frankenthaler’s works, a fusion of spontaneity and control, evidenced in her famed “soak-stain” technique, where she poured diluted paint onto unprimed canvas, allowing colours to blend organically. In 1973, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s exhibition Sixty-two Painted Book Covers, showcased Frankenthaler, a book about Helen Frankenthaler’s paintings, featuring a cover by Robert Motherwell and commentary by Barbara Rose. The special edition showcased uniquely painted cloth covers, transforming the book, as curator John J. McKendry highlights, “Frankenthaler, like a true artist-magician, has transformed this book. She has made a book on art into a work of art”.

On view until the 13th of July.

Represented Artist Jake Elwes debuts Z**i Project at East Quay, opening this month on the 25th of May, on view until the 2nd of September.

‍"The Z**i Project aims to bring together two things I love, artificial intelligence, and the world of drag performance. Drag has allowed me to dig into some of the social issues built into machine learning technology and explore the layers of construction and social bias in AI.
Working closely with friends from the London drag scene, in Z**i we have created a ‘deepfake’ virtual cabaret. Deepfake technology has enabled us to collaborate with machine learning to do drag, consensually re-animating each others forms. We trained our deepfakes on 21 extremely talented performers - perhaps proving that drag queens, drag kings and drag things will never be replaced by artificial intelligence.
The Z**i Project pushes the boundaries of both drag and AI to discover what AI can teach us about drag – and what drag can teach us about AI.”

Our Story

Gazelli Art House was founded in 2003 in Baku, Azerbaijan where it held exhibitions with Azeri artists. Having hosted conceptually interlinked off-site exhibitions across London, founder and director of Gazelli Art House Mila Askarova, opened a permanent space on Dover Street, London in March 2012. In 2017 the redesigned gallery space reopened in Baku, with an ambitious annual program showcasing both local and international artists.

Representing artists like Aziz+Cucher, Derek Boshier, Stanley Casselman, Francesco Jodice, Recycle Group, Kalliopi Lemos, Niyaz Najafov and Saad Qureshi amongst others, the gallery has built a consistent and diverse program with artists working in sculpture, photography, painting, video, performance and virtual reality.

In 2015, the gallery launched its Digital Art House www.gazell.io, an online residency for artists working in the digital and virtual reality realm. On an annual basis, curated shows titled Enter Through the Headset are held to feature a select few from the previous residents in the physical space of the gallery. Committed to building a market for VR works as a medium, audiences can access previously shown works both within the residency and at the group shows, through a headset available at all times in the gallery.

In 2012, the gallery launched the Window Project utilising the frontage of the gallery as an additional display platform. Since 2015, the initiative has been remodelled to solely accommodate art school graduates through open call competitions three times a year.
