Charlotte Perriand / Ateliers Jean Prouvé, Wall mounted bookcase and sideboard, 1965, in Mr and Mrs S. private house in Nancy, 1965 (J. Marconnet, architect, façade A. Wogenscky).

This set of furniture comprises a magnificent 36 feet wall bookcase and a large 19 5/8 feet sideboard.

These two unique pieces were specially commissioned for a house in Nancy built in the 60s by the architect J. Marconnet. It represents an extraordinary example of the period’s taste and spirit; indeed, the development of this house reveals the desire to plan an entire project, by taking into account the interaction between the architecture and the furniture components.

Jean Prouvé, Guéridon Haut GH 11, ca. 1941

The Guéridon Haut, designed by Jean Prouvé around 1941, features an oak veneer tabletop supported by three obliquely positioned triangular legs, connected by a three-branched tubular stretcher. The structure is secured with metal brackets screwed into the wood.

Created during the war, this now-iconic model follows the same leg principle as the S.A.M. dining table, developed simultaneously by Ateliers Jean Prouvé.

Pairing perfectly with the Métropole no. 305 chairs, the harmony of its proportions and the ideal diameter of its tabletop make this pedestal table easy to fit in any space.

Jean Prouvé, Direction no. 353 swivelling office chair, ca. 1951

The principle of the swivel seat—for chairs and office chairs—was adopted in 1944, to complement the office models created during the War. The tube of the swivel leg was stabilized by an X-shaped pressed steel base. The bent steel tube frame formed the support for the seat, the armrests and the backrest.

Initially made in only a few examples, this first model was later marketed as FP 11, after modifications aimed at improving the rigidity of the frame: crossed tubes under the seat and a continuous bar behind the backrest. The padding was covered with leather or fabric.

In 1951 the Direction no. 353 swiveling office chair replaced the FP 11, with a few details changed to improve comfort and finish. The bent steel of the feet was protected with stainless steel or diamond-point aluminum sheet, and was either encircled by an aluminum tube or fitted with casters. The padding was covered with fabric, leather or leatherette, as for the Direction no. 352 office chair, of which it was presented as the swivel variant. Often associated with the Présidence desk, the Direction no. 353 swiveling chair was successfully marketed—then made—by Steph Simon until the late 1950s.

Sofa set by Pierre Jeanneret, ca. 1955

These iconic pieces originally furnished administrative buildings in Chandigarh, India, a city where Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret fully expressed their modernist vision.

In 1950, following India’s independence, Pandit Nehru appointed Le Corbusier to undertake a vast modernization program for Chandigarh. Le Corbusier then entrusted his cousin and close collaborator Pierre Jeanneret with overseeing construction and designing most of the furniture. Jeanneret opted for readily available materials, with an emphasis on the different local species of wood, rot-resistant and perfectly adapted to the region’s climate.

This sofa set, finely re-upholstered, was specifically designed to provide exceptional comfort for visitors to administrative buildings. The low profile of the pieces creates a welcoming atmosphere, perfectly suited to their role as reception furniture. These iconic creations exemplify the thoughtful integration of form and function, embodying Chandigarh’s architectural vision, where each building and its furnishings are integrated into a harmonious and cohesive whole.

Jean Prouvé, Wardrobe no. 100, ca. 1952

The models made in response to special orders during the war were the basis for demountable storage furniture developed from 1944 onwards for the domestic market. Wardrobes and sideboards with sliding doors were designed at the same time and using the same system: a sheet metal structure with wooden top, bottom and doors, mounted on tube legs welded to equal strength side members.

This demountable wardrobe features a light structure lacquered in Van Dyck brown. Equipped with two sliding wooden doors, concealing a closet and deep shelves, it embodies all the full functionality of storage furniture designed by Jean Prouvé.

Jean Prouvé, Demountable chair CB 22, 1947

In 1947, based on studies conducted during the War, Jean Prouvé presented one of the first examples of “kit” furniture. The CB 22 chair, which is made up of two solid wood side/leg pieces held together by a pair of threaded rods housed in metal tubes, was designed for the Meubles de France competition.

Fully demountable, this model is a perfect illustration of Jean Prouvé’s “constructive thinking”, rooted in a logic that is rational and functional.

Jean Prouvé, S.A.M. Tropique no. 503 table, 1951

Derived from the prewar prototype, the metal version of the dining table base was finalized in 1951. This was a demountable model, as evidenced by the protrusion of the cap-ends where the crossmember frame meets the brace connecting the bent steel legs.
Of the option for the top, the most frequent was bent sheet aluminum set on a steel support structure comprising four U-traverses.

The metal parts of this model—S.A.M. Tropique no. 503—were often lacquered with contrasting colors. 90 examples were made in 1951.
