This Black History Month we’re sharing an excerpt from our 2026 exhibition, The Colonial Brontës, exploring the young Brontës writing which drew extensively from their colonial reading material.

From the Brontës to 'The Book of Bogs', moors, bogs and marshes have given rise to some of our finest writing. This is a day to revel in those words — and to add some of your own...

After a lively morning workshop with Clare Shaw and Anna Chilvers, the afternoon session will feature an incredible line-up of the UK and Ireland’s best contemporary eco-poets.

Expect a friendly and accessible event where you can be as active and creative as the performers. There's also a warm welcome to audience members who prefer to sit quietly and listen!

On this day in 1848, Branwell Brontë died at home in Haworth Parsonage.

Witnessing her brother's death, Charlotte wrote to William Smith Williams on 6 Oct 1848:

"When the struggle was over - and a marble calm began to succeed the last dread agony - I felt as I had never felt before that there was peace and forgiveness for him in Heaven. All his errors - to speak plainly - all his vices seemed nothing to me in that moment; every wrong he had done, every pain he had caused, vanished; his sufferings only were remembered"
