CALL FOR PAPERS! 📝

We're inviting proposals for papers on The Brontës and the Supernatural for a one day, in-person symposium in Haworth. 👻

This symposium seeks to broaden the parameters of Gothic scholarship on the Brontës by exploring the diverse supernatural traditions, beliefs and cultural narratives that informed the family’s imaginative and everyday worlds. We welcome new and original symposium paper proposals from academics, postgraduates and enthusiasts on topics that have perhaps received less attention.

Proposals (of no more than 300 words) for 20-minute papers should be submitted to [email protected] with the subject 'Symposium' by 31 December 2026.

1 month to go until the Brontë Women's Writing Festival! ⭐📝

Following the success of the Wandering Imaginations project in 2025, we're continuing our literary partnership with Bradford Culture Company and Writers Project of Ghana.

Literary Sisters features writers Barsa Ray and Tabitha Bast from Bradford, and Emma Ofosua and Priscilla Adipa from Accra. They'll be joining us at this year's festival to share new work developed during this international writers exchange!

The project is supported by the British Council and features a companion event at Pa Gya! Festival in Accra, Ghana, in October.

Have you listened to our latest podcast episode? 🎧

This blue silk board displays locks of hair from Maria, Charlotte, Branwell, Emily and Anne Brontë dating to 1824, when they were children. Mrs Brontë's lock of hair is likely to have been taken after she died in 1821, and sadly there is no lock from the second eldest child, Elizabeth. There is also a lock of Patrick’s hair dating to 1860.

The hairboard belonged to Sarah Newsome, formerly a nursemaid to the young Brontë family who emigrated to America following her marriage in 1829. In a letter, Patrick describes how much life has changed for him since he last saw her:

'When, You , and / Your sister Nancy, first / came to us at Thornton, / My Dear Wife, and all / my Dear Children were / living… They are all, now dead –/ and I, bordering, on the age / of eighty years, am left / alone -'
