On this day in 1825, the second-oldest Brontë sibling, Elizabeth, died of tuberculosis.

Elizabeth had been at school in Cowan Bridge with her sisters Maria, Charlotte and Emily. Maria had died from tuberculosis just over a month before.

A fever had spread around the school shortly after and most of the girls were sent to Silverdale on the Lancashire coast, including Charlotte and Emily. Elizabeth, however, was deemed too ill and was taken back to Haworth without the school forewarning her father, Patrick.

On Elizabeth's return home, Patrick saw the signs of consumption and the next day went to collect Charlotte and Emily, scared that they too were in danger. Elizabeth died at the age of ten and Charlotte and Emily never returned to Cowan Bridge.

Hollywood legend Margaret O’Brien starred alongside Orson Welles and Joan Fontaine in Robert Stevenson’s 1943 adaptation of ‘Jane Eyre’. 🎬

The following year Margaret was awarded a Juvenile Academy Award for her performance in ‘Meet Me In St Louis’, and she would go on to portray Beth in the 1949 adaptation of ‘Little Women’.

With thanks to Kimberley ( ), the Brontë Parsonage Museum were able to put forward some questions to Margaret about her time portraying Adele in ‘Jane Eyre’. 📖🩵

The Brontë Society has submitted its response to the proposals for the construction of Calderdale Energy Park on Walshaw Moor in the heart of Brontë Country. While we have a commitment to environmental sustainability and renewable energy, we are strongly opposed to this development.

The PEIR does not contain the baseline evidence for any assessment of the effect on Brontë heritage of the proposal and simply claims that 'effects on the Brontë-related landscape are minor and not significant.’ We strongly dispute this claim: the moorland between Haworth and Hebden Bridge allows the literary tourist to physically travel through the landscapes of the Brontës' imaginations and the worlds of their novels and poetry. This link between the Brontë texts and the surrounding landscape was noted by Virginia Woolf when she visited Haworth in 1904:

"I do not know whether pilgrimages to the shrines of famous men ought not to be condemned as sentimental journeys. It is better to read Carlyle in your own study chair than to visit the sound-proof room and pore over the manuscripts at Chelsea. The curiosity is only legitimate when the house of a great writer or the country in which it is set adds something to our understanding of his books. This justification you have for a pilgrimage to the home and country of Charlotte Brontë and her sisters."

Woolf, along with the 70,000 visitors who visit the Brontë Parsonage Museum from across the world each year, clearly understood the inseparable connection between the local landscape and the Brontës, a connection which cannot be dismissed.

The deadline for consultees to respond to the proposals is 23:59 on Wednesday 10 June. We urge all those who are eligible to comment to do so.

We're entering festival season in Haworth with all things gothic! 🖤

In collaboration with Haworth Festival, we're hosting a deliciously gothic event with Dr Alessandra Pino, co-author of 'A Gothic Cookbook'. We will be looking into how gothic food manifests into the Brontës novels... 📖🍴

On this day in 1861, Patrick Brontë died at home in Haworth Parsonage.

Patrick was the perpetual curate at Haworth Church for 41 years. In his later years, he was assisted by Charlotte's husband, Arthur Bell Nicholls. He was a campaigner on a wide range of religious, social and political issues, and his efforts helped to improve sanitation in the village.

Patrick died aged 84, having outlived all his children and having no direct descendants.
