🥳 Happy 100th anniversary to Shibden Park!

On this day in 1926, the park was formally opened to the public by Edward, Prince of Wales (later King Edward VIII) with the ceremonial planting of an oak tree. It was said the Prince mistook John Lister, who was the last owner of Shibden Hall to live here, for a gardener! Sadly, the tree is no longer there to celebrate this anniversary.

In 1923, Shibden Park had been purchased from John Lister by his friend and Halifax Councillor, Arthur McCrea, who gave the parkland to the people of Halifax. At the same time, McCrea had also bought Shibden Hall with the agreement that John and his sister Annie Lister could live out their days at the Hall.

💚 Since then, Shibden Park has become part of many a life and childhood in Halifax, whether that’s walking the grounds, renting a boat or pedalo on the mere, enjoying the play park or taking a trip on the miniature railway.

Join us for a very festive weekend at Shibden Hall as we celebrate the spirit of Christmas!

Enjoy the Hall dressed in traditional decorations and learn about Christmas celebrations over the past centuries.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us on Saturday for our living history day with Sir John Savile's Household!

We had a fantastic time, and visitors enjoyed some brilliant demonstrations of 15th century life including archery and combat, food preparation, embroidery, stone carving and calligraphy.

With this guide and display of objects from Shibden Hall's past, learn more about the use of magical charms and symbols to help ward off evil spirits and protect homes.

This Saturday!

🛡 Experience 15th century life with Sir John Savile’s Household at Shibden Hall.

🗓️ Saturday 10 October, 11am to 4pm

Be transported back to the earliest days of Shibden Hall and learn how everyday life unfolded in a medieval household with this immersive and family-friendly day.

Sir John Savile's Household are a Yorkist reenactment group who portray a household during the Wars of the Roses, and we are delighted they will be joining us at Shibden.

📜 Visitors can discover medieval crafts and skills with live demonstrations such as food preparation, spinning, embroidery, fletching, wood carving, calligraphy and combat.

We hope you can join us for what promises to be a brilliant living history day.

Then vs Now!

This pencil drawing of Shibden Hall was sketched by Mr Browne of York. and on the reverse it is dated 7 September 1842.

This is likely the same Mr Browne who had taught Ann Walker drawing in York. At this time Ann was living at Shibden Hall following Anne Lister's death in 1840.

The drawing shows some of the last major work Anne Lister had commissioned at Shibden - the Gothic tower on the left of the image - and which was completed in the late 1830s. In April 1839 she recorded in her diary moving her library into the finished tower.

As you can see, much of the exterior of Shibden Hall has been preserved over the last 184 years.
