It’s a cold, mizzly day, but the garden team are working hard to bring some colour to Hatchlands.
They’ve built these new beds in the walled garden in preparation for planting over 100 sweet pea plants. There may be just bare earth now, but we are looking forward to the walled garden coming to life with their vibrant colour and gorgeous scent. Roll on summer!🌞
If may not be the most exciting Facebook picture, but this is the start of something big for Callum and Morris… groundworks have begun for their new stable! Our plan is to also create a little family picnic area next to it. Hopefully that will put a smile on the boys’ faces! 😃🥕

Just a little reminder that today and tomorrow are the last days to visit the house before Christmas. Our festive house is open from 12-3pm and the parkland is open from10am-4pm.
We're closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, but re-open on Boxing Day.
The natural Christmas decorations on our tree at reception are gradually diminishing and we've found the culprit!

This is our moth trap from last night – the moths are attracted to the light, we count and photograph them and then safely release them.
We had lots of moths come to see us, but our particular favourite is this buff-tip moth with its wonderful camouflage. When it sits still, its colour and shape makes it look just like a broken birch twig!
As a bit of an antidote to the drama of Wimbledon, these two are taking a more relaxed approach to tennis…
We actually do have racquets and balls available, if you would like to come along and have a go! Our ‘Come out and Play’ activities are now up and running with badminton, croquet, board games and more – there’ll be different games and sports to try daily. https://bit.ly/3yf4id1
Do you remember the bumps, dips and puddles in our Victorian cobbled courtyard? Well, it’s having a makeover! Each cobble is being removed and then carefully re-laid to improve accessibility and surface water drainage. It’s a bit disruptive, but definitely will be worth it! Thank you for bearing with us while the work takes place. (There is still access to the Kitchen Café, toilets and second-hand bookshop).

We love the summer colours in the parterre at the moment, with the cerise jewels of the peonies dotted amongst the soft pinks, mauves and lilacs of the poppies, geraniums and salvia. A wonderful place to sit and relax.

Hatchlands Park was built in the 1750s for Admiral Edward Boscawen and his wife F***y. They gave architect, Robert Adam, one of his earliest commissions. His work can be seen in interiors throughout the house. Today the mansion is a family home, containing tenant Alec Cobbe’s collection of paintings and fine furniture. Also on display is the Cobbe Collection, Europe’s largest collection of keyboard instruments associated with famous composers including Bach, Chopin and Elgar. With over 400 acres of parkland, partly landscaped by Humphrey Repton and providing six waymarked walks, we're one of the largest country estates surrounding Greater London. Families will love the natural adventure area with its treehouse, bug burrow, balance beams and willow tunnels.

We’re delighted that we’ve been able to start welcoming visitors back to Hatchlands but we appreciate that it might be a little frustrating that not every area of the house and park is open right away. We wanted to share some of our favourite features and collection items from inside the mansion to help provide you with your fix until we’re able to safely reopen the house. To start with, Mark, our Senior House Steward, talks about the inner workings of our courtyard clock.

Hopefully you've met our donkey friends by now, Morris and Callum. One of our team of intrepid donkey wranglers caught them on camera last week getting rather annoyed with each other. Don't worry though, they usually get on very well!
