in 1912 the Sopwith School of Flying was founded by Thomas Sopwith at Brooklands.

Thomas Sopwith was an early aviation pioneer. By the end of 1912 he moved in to Military Aircraft production, opening the Sopwith Aviation Company at Brooklands.

The company made more than 16,000 aircraft during the First World War.

After WW1 the Sopwith Aviation Company went bankrupt. Thomas Sopwith along with other such as Harry Hawker then founded the H.G. Hawker Engineering Company.

Brooklands Museum

Brooklands - the world’s first purpose-built motor racing circuit, constructed at Weybridge, Surrey in 1907

📷

Built in 1907 by Hugh and Ethel Locke King, Brooklands became the place where this country’s most daring drivers and inventive engineers came during the sport’s most formative years. The World Land Speed Record was set here on three separate occasions, the Track hosted the first two RAC British Grands Prix in 1926 and 1927.

Motorcycle racing started at Brooklands in 1908 and the Track quickly became home of many motorcycle riders, including Eric Fernihough and Noel Pope.

Brooklands Museum isn't just about racing cars!

This February Half Term explore the world of flight as you take a step back in time to the early days of aviation when Brooklands pioneered aircraft and pilot training.

There's something for all ages - families can explore this unique museum through hands-on and interactive experiences, and with so much going on both inside and out, even the most curious of minds will be fulfilled!
Vickers Wellington Mk.IA N2980 on display at Brooklands Museum. The Wellington was a mainstay of the RAF during WW2 and was the only British bomber to have been built throughout the entirety of the war. It was designed as a long range medium bomber by a team led by Vickers-Armstrong's chief designer Rex Pierson, and is well known for using the method of geodetic construction as developed by Barnes Wallis, who at the time was working at Vickers.
-
This construction method provided a robust airframe that could take heavy damage and still maintain structural strength. However, it would take longer to build when compared to more conventional construction methods. They primarily served in Bomber and Coastal Command but would later see use as transport and trainer aircraft. Most unusual is perhaps the Mk.VI which featured a pressurised pod for the crew giving the nose a bullet like appearance. Different variants would be powered by Bristol Pegasus, Rolls Royce Merlin, Bristol Hercules, and Pratt and Whitney Twin Wasps.
-
N2980 is one of just two complete Wellingtons, and the only one that is on public display, although recovered parts from others exist. She first flew in 1939 and went on to fly operationally with RAF 149 and 37 Sqn. In December 1940 whilst with 20 Operational Training Unit she suffered engine problems and was forced to ditch in Loch Ness. Years later in 1976 she was discovered by Loch Ness Monster hunters (!) and was successfully recovered in 1985 in remarkably complete condition.
-
Her geodetic construction is well illustrated at the museum as her fabric covering was not fully replaced whilst she was prepared for display - she makes for a stunning sight in the museums Aircraft Factory display hangar.
We had a great day visiting Brooklands Museum and 🏎✈️🦮

George Pritchard had quite the career in the RAF, but before graduating to the sleek and racy De Haviland Mosquito, George flew the venerable Vickers Wellington. The Wellington has a special place in our hearts on the pod, and it was great to hear what George thought of the old Wimpey.

On Sunday me and Paul went to Weybridge in Surrey and visited Brooklands Museum for the first time and filmed a “Museum Crazy” vlog (now available to watch)

The weather was awful and we didn’t have time to see everything, we also got chatting to lots of very informative and interesting volunteers and staff and had a fun couple of hours, also seeing the very first Concord was ace

This is a place I have wanted to visit for ages and it’s one of those places where i wish I could turn up in a DeLorean Time Machine and see the incredible motor racing which took place here from 1907 - 1939

There’s loads here for a good half day out including vintage motorcycles, racing cars, aeroplanes, aircraft, busses and a huge 270ton pressure chamber, I will be back at some point in the future
Last weekend we went to Brooklands Museum in Surrey, for the New Years Day Gathering and it was PUKKA!! 👍

It was our first time at Brooklands Museum and as feasting out eyes on a wide variety of cars parked around the site (including LOADS of classic Fords! 😃), we got to check out all the exhibits inside the Museum itself.
Brooklands Museum is on the site of the FIRST purpose built race track in the world, so it has real significance when it comes to the automotive world.
During the 2nd World War the site was used for the manufacture of planes, so there is plenty of aircraft history to see there too. In fact during our walk around the site i went onto an aeroplane for the first (and probably the last) time in my life. #2023
Last weekend we went to Brooklands Museum for the first time ever. It was such an awesome day out and I'll defo be back again! 👍
