Brooklands - the world’s first purpose-built motor racing circuit, constructed at Weybridge, Surrey in 1907
📷
Built in 1907 by Hugh and Ethel Locke King, Brooklands became the place where this country’s most daring drivers and inventive engineers came during the sport’s most formative years. The World Land Speed Record was set here on three separate occasions, the Track hosted the first two RAC British Grands Prix in 1926 and 1927.
Motorcycle racing started at Brooklands in 1908 and the Track quickly became home of many motorcycle riders, including Eric Fernihough and Noel Pope.
The Museum is home to the Members’ Banking, the steepest part of the Brooklands race track, and has a wide collection of cars, motorcycles and bicycles, particularly from the heyday of the track until it closed in 1939. The motoring collection is displayed inside the surviving Motoring Village buildings, next to the iconic Brooklands Clubhouse.
Brooklands was also one of the most prolific aircraft production sites in Europe. From A V Roe’s first trials here in 1907-08, through many decades of manufacture, no other place in Europe, has seen such achievements. Some 18,600 new aircraft of nearly 250 types were first flown, manufactured or assembled at Brooklands.
The Museum’s collection of Brooklands aircraft spanning the last hundred years ranges from a replica of the aeroplane in which A.V.Roe carried out pioneering flight trials to Concorde G-BBDG.
Inside the new award-winning Brooklands Aircraft Factory exhibition, we tell the story of Brooklands’ manufacturing heritage. Exhibitions explore the history of aircraft manufacture - from the pioneering early aircraft of wood and fabric, to the supersonic airliner and the technologies of the future.
Across in the Aircraft Park visitors can step aboard the Brooklands Concorde and re-live the supersonic age on our fascinating 35-minute tour. Inside the Balloon Hangar building, we have created a 4D Theatre that provides the closest experience any living person will have of “racing” around the Brooklands Race Track, “flying” with the Red Arrows or "Driving" with Mike Hawthorne around Le Mans.
A wide range of motoring and aviation events are held through the year – full details are on the Museum What’s On Calendar.
The Museum is open from 10am every day except a few days over Christmas. we close at 4pm in the winter and 5pm in the summer. To find out more about our opening times and admission please visit our website.
Admission Charges Adult £14. 50 Senior Citizen/Student £13.50 Children (5-16) £8.00 Children under 5 FREE Family ticket £38.00 (2 adults & up to 3 children)
