We at The Spike were sad to learn of Jenny Jordan’s passing last week. The image below is of Jenny when she was Mayor of Guildford opening The Spike with Anne Milton.
We thank her for all her hard work and may she rest in peace. 🕊
🏴 Sadly we can’t host our annual Burns Night this year but here is a video from last year to brighten everyone’s mood! Hope you have all had your haggis neeps and tatties and we look forward to seeing you next year! 🏴

Did you know the Guildford Union Workhouse is just outside the town centre. Built in 1838 after the Poor Law amendment act, a casual's ward was added in 1905. Today you can visit the Spike Heritage Centre. Find out more http://orlo.uk/dRNgJ

The community have been working hard today and we are pleased to say we have meal packs for children available to collect tomorrow. The packs include an Indian meal of curry and rice (chicken or vegetable) from Mandira's Kitchen, Albury, a drink, snacks, breakfast bar, fruit and more.
Please call us tomorrow from 9am on 01483 444150 so we can allocate you a meal and arrange your collection from the Park Barn Centre :)

The Spike Heritage and Community Centre, Warren Road, Guildford. Originally built in 1905-6 as the Vagrants' and Casual ward of the Guildford Union Workhouse, The Spike is now run by the Charlotteville Jubilee Trust. It hosts community events as well as providing pre-booked tours focusing on the history and experience of life in the Spike during the "Poor Law" era.

The Spike is unique. Opened in 1836, the workhouse is the last remaining of over 600 in the country with its stone-breaking/wood-chopping cells showing how you could have paid for a night's kip. Ever picked Oakum? Find out how! The Spike is brought to life twice a week. Open on Tuesdays and Saturdays from 10a.m. Last t0ur 3p.m. Tours take approximately 90 minutes, including a short film. £6.00/5.00. Groups can book in any day for a minimum charge of £45.00, please call to arrange. We can make your day very memorable and provide luncheon/refreshments. Evening tours and parties catered for. Parking is free.
The Spike was converted into a fully functioning NHS hospital in 1945 but the journey from workhouse to hospital wasn’t a simple one! The St Luke’s Hospital Heritage project investigates the progression the workhouse has taken over the years. Currently in The Spike there is an exhibition on this fascinating project including stories and pictures from patients and staff. The Community Centre, which used to home the female vagrants, has been fully refurbished and is available to rent for functions or reoccurring business! Please get in touch either by phone or email if this is of interest. Free car parking available and tables and chairs are available to rent.
The Park room is good for a work out, a bit of Pilates or some Yoga! Often rented for dining or dancing events, this room looks out over St. Luke’s park. Dimensions (in metres): 4.00 Wide x 9.80 Long by 3.50 High
The Garden room boasts oak paneling and carpet - game of bridge anyone? This room connects directly to both the kitchen and the garden. Dimensions (in metres): 4.36 Wide x 8.20 Long by 2.90 High

In the past, CJT has hosted a range of events such as the Seaside Extravaganza, The Guildford Pancake Races, Burns Night and Spooky Spike! Each of these events supports a local of charity including The Prostate Project, The Orchard Dementia Centre and The Mayor of Guildford’s Local Distress Fund. Since the summer of 2016, CJT has started to look after some tiny vagrants - two hives of bees! The hard workers not only pollinate The Spike garden and surrounding park, but have also managed to produce honey. The Charlotteville honey proved to be very popular last year and supplies sold out within days! If you are interested in purchasing a jar, you better be quick! Sales usually start in September/October but will be first announced on this page!
