Last night, BBC Radio 3 paid a beautiful tribute to our founder Alec Cobbe. A remarkable man who built one of the world's most significant collections of keyboard instruments, played by the hands of the composers themselves. His vision lives on.

We regret to announce the death on 31st March 2026 of our founder, Alec Cobbe, who shared with all he met his passion for music and the arts that form the core of The Cobbe Collection. He died peacefully, at his home at Hatchlands Park, on 31st March. Our thoughts are with his family and friends who will miss him greatly. There will be a private family funeral and a memorial service in the autumn.

This week has seen birthdays of some of the greatest minds of Russian music - Rimsky-Korsakov, Rachmaninov and today is the birthday of Modest Petrovich . All of them (and many others) were very fond of this particular piano maker - Jakob Davydovich Becker, who established his factory in St Petersburg in 1841 and was producing these beautiful warm and sonorous instruments during 19th and early 20th centuries.

You can hear it in one of our concerts by Ingrid Jacoby:
