Museum of Gloucester is here to tell the collective story of the place and people of the city of Gloucester. Housed in a fine Victorian building on Brunswick Road, the Museum is home to a collection of over 750,000 objects of international importance. There's a small portion of our fascinating collection on display in our exhibition spaces. We start our story with Gloucester’s origins as a Roman s
ettlement and its development through the Dark Ages and Medieval period. The Archaeology collection includes the world-famous Birdlip Mirror, impressive Roman tombstones and the Gloucester Tables Set, the oldest complete backgammon set in the world, as well as the Sword of Richard III and countless other fascinating objects. We've also got notable objects from the history of the city from the Civil War right through to the 21st Century. Oh, and we have lots of taxidermy. And who could forget the enormous number of clocks! The museum hosts two major visiting exhibitions per year in our upstairs gallery, in addition to our permanent displays on the ground floor. Highlights include a Roman kitchen playhouse and medieval street and part of the original Roman wall can also be viewed within the museum. Also visit our café, serving a range of tea, coffee and cakes, crisps and biscuits as well as our gift shop full of both history-inspired gifts and local products. We can't wait to welcome you!
