OBJECT OF THE WEEK: Japanese Flag – Burma Campaign, 1944

Captured in Burma in 1944 by J.P. O'Connor of the 10th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment, this Japanese flag is a poignant reminder of one of the toughest campaigns fought by British soldiers during the Second World War.

Flags such as these were often carried by Japanese soldiers as personal good-luck charms, inscribed with messages from family and friends before they departed for war.

You can adopt this object for £100 through the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum Adopt an Object scheme, helping to preserve and care for the stories entrusted to our collection.

Explore the incredible legacy of The Gloucestershire Regiment, known as "The Glosters," a regiment that has proudly served for over three centuries.

From the Battle of Alexandria to their celebrated actions in the Korean War, the Glosters have consistently demonstrated exceptional courage and resilience.

What Makes the Glosters Unique?

• The only regiment in the British Army with the honour of wearing a back badge, symbolizing their valiant stand at the Battle of Alexandria.
• Awarded 72 battle honours during World War I, with 16 battalions serving across multiple theatres of war.
• Known for their heroic stand at the Battle of Imjin River during the Korean War, where they held off overwhelming forces for three days. For this action they were awarded the US Presidential Citation.

After their tercentenary celebration in 1994, the regiment merged with others, but their legacy and traditions live on. Honour their memory and explore their heroic history!

OBJECT OF THE WEEK: The Maunsell Medal Group

This remarkable group of five medals was awarded to Thomas Maunsell of the 28th (North Gloucestershire) Regiment, reflecting service in India and the Crimean War between 1848 and 1856.

During the siege of Sebastopol, Maunsell commanded a Divisional Sharpshooter detachment formed from picked men of the 28th and other regiments. Operating far ahead of the trenches under constant fire, these sharpshooters targeted Russian gunners and infantry in some of the siege’s most dangerous fighting.

After leading these parties for seventy-six days, Maunsell was severely wounded when a Russian sharpshooter shattered his left arm. He later returned to Britain and retired with the rank of Major-General.

You can adopt this object for £100 through our Adopt an Object scheme, helping support the care and preservation of the collection.

The story of our regiments doesn't end in the past!

At Soldiers of Glos, we celebrate the ongoing dedication and service of our modern regiments, who continue to build upon a rich legacy of courage, resilience, and duty. Today, these regiments play vital roles in the British Army Reserve, maintaining the spirit of their forebears while adapting to contemporary challenges.

 Our Modern Regiments Include:

• The Royal Gloucestershire Hussars: Now part of the Royal Wessex Yeomanry, providing crucial armoured support and training replacement crews for Challenger 2 tanks.
• The Rifles: Inheriting traditions from the Glosters, this regiment is one of the largest in the British Army and continues to serve with distinction around the globe.

Join us in honouring these regiments as they continue to uphold the values and traditions of their storied histories while forging new paths in modern military service.

in 1940 began the defence of the Dunkirk pocket. Whilst the British Expeditionary Force and few remaining French retreated to Dunkirk the 2nd and 5th battalions of the Gloucestershire Regiment took part in yet another of their fabled rear-guard actions.

2nd battalion held firm at the natural fortress of Cassel whilst a little further down the road at Ledringhem were 5th battalion. For several days these heroes would hold back the masses of Germans who had steamrolled all before them.

Ultimately over 300,000 men were evacuated from Dunkirk whilst 632 Glosters paid the price for their sacrifice by spending the rest of the war in German captivity.

in 1942 began the Battle of Gazala. This is close to the essential port of Tobruk in North Africa.

Fighting Rommel's Afrika Corp was tough and twice the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars were taken out of the line for refit.

When the RGH lost two commanders killed in action in quick succession, the regiment's individual squadrons were used to reinforce other units.
