In loving memory of Fungai Dodzo
A tribute to a master of stone sculpture.
The Zimbabwean stone sculpting community has been plunged into deep mourning following the sudden and untimely passing of the exceptionally talented Shona sculptor, Fungai Dodzo who departed this life on Sunday 21st June 2026.
Born on 11th January 1973 in Mutare, along the scenic border of Zimbabwe and Mozambique, Dodzo’s transition is an immense and heartbreaking loss to both Zimbabwe and international art world.
He leaves behind a profound artistic legacy, his beloved wife Patricia Mutsengi and 3 children. His passing has sent Shockwaves through the close knit network of Zimbabwean stone carvers and creators, fellow artists, gallery owners and art enthusiasts have expressed profound sadness describing his death as a devastating blow to the contemporary legacy of shona art.
He was widely respected not only for his immense technical mastery over dense indigenous stones but also for his humility, collaborative spirit and willingness to uplift the artistic family around him.
His absence leaves a void that will be felt across the art pavilions of Harare and Chitungwiza sculpting communities as well as galleries that proudly displayed his vision.
While Fungai Dodzo has finally put down his chisel, his spirit lives on through the breathtaking sculptures that grace homes and prominent international galleries worldwide ❤️
