Craft skills are passed from one generation to the next through people, families and communities.

We were delighted to visit Craft Skills: Generation to Generation at the

The exhibition explores how traditional textile skills, including embroidery, tatting, crochet, knotting, and needlework, have been passed down through generations. Alongside contemporary responses, visitors can discover family heirlooms, personal stories and objects that reveal how craft knowledge is preserved and passed on.

The exhibition brings together work and collections connected to Varshini Chandrasekhar, Krishna Kotecha and NeveSmith as well as to

They ask how making can carry memory, identity and knowledge across generations, cultures and places.

Particularly inspiring were the personal histories behind the works, including pieces that travelled through families over more than a century, carrying memories, skills and connections from one generation to the next.

As we prepare for Surrey Craft Legacies: Heritage and Endangered Skills, Living Traditions opening at New Ashgate Gallery on 3 July, the exhibition is a timely reminder that heritage crafts are not simply techniques from the past. They remain living traditions shaped by the people who practise, share and reinvent them today.

Congratulations to the Crafts Study Centre, curator and all the artists, makers and families involved.

Open until 25 July.

Meet the Team: Bronwen Robinson is our Art Consultant for Textiles.

Bronwen is a textile artist and designer, with a degree in textiles from Manchester Metropolitan University. She knows fabric, colour, pattern and texture inside out, and brings a maker’s eye to the gallery.

At New Ashgate, Bronwen helps us show textile work with care. She understands how a piece is made, how it sits in a space, and how the right textile can bring warmth and character to a home.

Ask Bronwen about: textiles, interiors, colour, pattern and finding the right piece for your wall, room or favourite corner.

Small team. Big programme. Many hats.

This week, meet the small team behind New Ashgate Gallery: the people who support artists, welcome visitors, run exhibitions, deliver workshops and keep our charity moving.

Meet the Team: Laurence Knoop Meet, our Programme Producer for Surrey Craft Legacies.

Laurence helps coordinate our heritage craft project, working with makers, community partners and local groups to share traditional and endangered skills.

He also has his own craft practice in ropework, basketry and knot-tying, so he understands the patience, problem-solving and skill behind handmade work.

Ask Laurence about: heritage craft, workshops, oral histories and why rope is much more interesting than it sounds.

This week, we are introducing the small team behind New Ashgate Gallery: the people who support artists, welcome visitors, run exhibitions, deliver workshops, manage projects, sort the numbers and keep our busy little arts charity moving.

Meet Sinéad Fox, who leads our Craft Heroes children’s parties.

Sinéad is a local artist and qualified primary teacher, with a brilliant way of helping children feel confident with art materials. Her parties are all about making, trying things out, having fun and enjoying the mess.

Expect colour, imagination, busy hands and happy young makers.

Ask us about: children’s birthday parties, creative themes, materials and how to best celebrate a family birthday.

Meet the team behind New Ashgate Gallery. This week, we are introducing the people who help keep our exhibitions, artists, visitors and community programmes moving.

Meet the Team: Outi Remes. Outi is our Gallery Director, which means she is usually somewhere between an exhibition plan, a funding deadline, a trustee paper, a press request and a cup of green tea that has gone cold.

She has led New Ashgate Gallery since 2011 and works with the team, trustees, artists and partners to keep the gallery’s exhibitions, charitable work and future plans moving.

Ask Outi about: exhibitions, partnerships, fundraising, strategy, community projects and why small arts charities need very large to-do lists.

Say hello next time you visit.
