Museum of Farnham

Museum of Farnham Based in the Grade 1 Listed Wilmer House on West Street, the Museum of Farnham is home to everything you need to know (and more) about our lovely town.

Visit the Museum of Farnham to learn about the history of Farnham and the local area through permanent and temporary exhibitions. We regularly run events and activities for all ages, so keep an eye out for details of our upcoming programme. The museum is always free so why not come along to look at our exhibitions, admire the grade I listed building they are situated in or just relax in our beautiful walled garden. There really is something for everyone.

Do you recognise this street? Well, it’s West Street in Farnham during the Victorian period!

As you can see, things were slightly different then. A trip in to town was most often done on foot, or if available by horse and cart.

On this street you could stop at Brown’s butchers (bottom left), then continue along the road to Elphicks, yes Elphicks! The original store was opened in 1881 at 13 West Street by George Elphick as a drapery business. The business continued to grow, taking over more properties and becoming the department store we all know it as today.

As shops tended to specialise in one or two goods, getting your week’s food and other bits would be quite the task, luckily there seems to have been no issues with traffic on this particular day in Victorian Farnham.

Today our longest serving volunteer, Tina, is working on updating our collections catalogue. Tina has been a volunteer at the Museum for 44 years, and has seen many new objects come through our doors!

Pictured is a replica of the Byworth cup. The original was presented to the town by John Byworth in 1623.

Here's something to brighten up those darker days and remind us of summer! 🌞

This Victory plywood jigsaw puzzle was produced by G. J. Hayter & Co, and dates to the 1960s. Their Victory jigsaw puzzles were widely available in department stores throughout the 1950s and 1960s and were an affordable pastime during this period. This one was created as a children's toy.

We think there's something very charming about it!

Time to show our faces… part 2!

Now that Emily has introduced herself, it’s my turn to say hello!

I’m Lana, Assistant Curator, and I’m the newest member of the team, having started at the Museum in July. I love all things old, but have a particular soft spot for antique toys and textiles. In my free time I collect Steiff bears and artist bears, so I’m a big child at heart! My favourite period of history is the 16th century.

I help Josh, our Curator, with all aspects of running the Museum and looking after the collection, but a lot of you will know me as the point of contact for Garden Gallery bookings. In the museum world I’m really passionate about community engagement, as well as how we can use technology to create new and exciting experiences.

Looking forward to meeting and talking with you all more!

Time to show our faces!

We’ve had a few staff changes here at the museum recently, so we thought we'd say hi - and let you know who we are!

I’m kicking us off .... hello! I'm Emily, the Learning & Community Engagement Officer. I keep myself busy coordinating much of our education workshops with schools and have lots of fun in the holidays getting messy with crafts and other activities.

On a personal note, I love social history and anything old with a story to tell. I live here, in Farnham, and have really enjoyed getting to know our fantastic volunteers, and working in such beautiful surroundings.

I hope to meet you in person soon!

This wooden toy horse and cart was gifted to the museum in 1973! It has metal chain and leather reins, and the cart is an example of a two wheeled tip cart from the 1920s. It seems to be a bit like marmite around here - our Assistant Curator, Lana, loves it but a lot of the other staff and volunteers don't feel the same!

What do you think? 🤔

To the sweet ladies on Reception yesterday, THANK YOU for your kind welcome and I loved my visit there to your museum! Also to reassure you I found the person I was looking for whom I had 'lost' during our cultural visit to Farnham, he was safe and sound back in my home town!
