Last week, Gallery Directors paid a visit to the studio space of David Martin in anticipation of his upcoming exhibition 'Silk Roads: New work from travels in Central Asia'.

David Martin (b.1975) is an artist living and working in Edinburgh. In his painting practice he aims to make work that reflects the state of the world we live in. He has a particular interest in travelling to places where he can explore themes of global change and transformation, and he approaches this by spending time drawing, photographing and documenting everyday life.

Having Adrian Wiszniewski RSA in the gallery over the weekend was truly a privilege. During his visit Adrian shared insights into his artistic process. Inspired by music and his desire to compose, he begins his paintings as he would music, with a single dot which has the potential to lead anywhere.

His current exhibition 'Science and Nature' will be on display until this Saturday the 3rd of February.

Adrian Wiszniewski RSA was born in Glasgow and remains best known as one of the ‘New Glasgow Boys’. The New Glasgow Boys were a new generation of bold, young figurative painters who all studied at The Glasgow School of Art in the 1980s, producing work on a heroic scale often taking their subject matter from working class Scotland. They went on to achieve national and international success and helped ignite the revival in figurative art in Scotland. The Group wa comprised of Peter Howson, Ken Currie, Adrian Wiszniewski and the late Steven Campbell.

Through his deliberate play with our gaze, David Evans entices us to become fully absorbed in the minute detail present in his 1981 work 'Reception'. Every aspect, from the carefully-crafted plasterwork to the impeccably polished shoes, invites you to explore and discover the hidden depths within this seemingly mundane scene.

Before picking up a brush, Barbara Rae dedicates weeks to personally connect with locals, unravel their stories, and explore the historical background of her chosen location. This research fuels her artistic vision, enabling her to produce powerful prints and paintings in her Edinburgh studios that reflect the essence of each location she visits.

Currently on display and watching out over Abercromby Place is this one-off pair of 'Watching Cats' by Jeremy James.

James' work is concerned with animals and people and frequently, their interaction. Much of the sculptural work is made in high fired ceramic and fired in an ageing gas kiln. All the work is ‘one-off’, unique pieces with extensive hand modelling of soft stoneware clay involved in its making.

David Evan's current exhibition recently received a four star review from Professor Duncan MacMillan in the Scotsman⭐

"Light is crucial to the strange mood in his paintings of deserted streets and enigmatic, often shuttered buildings. In a picture like Central Supply, where the sun casts a sharp shadow across a shut up industrial building, time seems suspended in haunting stillness in a way that is reminiscent of de Chirico."

David Evans ARCA RSA RSW (1942-2020) spent his career developing and perfecting his painting technique, resulting in an output of hyper-realistic scenes of seemingly mundane interior views, still lifes, building facades and street scenes. His earlier paintings of sidewalk views, interchanges and exterior neon and directional signage nod to the work of super-realists such as Richard Estes.

Adrian Wiszniewski's style has changed relatively little over his career, meaning his graphic stamp is particularly distinctive.

Much of his painting is formed through a wandering but controlled outline, with hatching to define both form and space. This creates a particularly captivating effect that should be appreciated in the flesh.

The gallery will be open until 5pm today should you wish to visit Wiszniewski's 'Science and Nature' exhibition.

✨2024 has arrived, and we’re delighted to share our January exhibitions✨

Adrian Wizsniewki's 'Science and Nature' is an exhibition populated with contemplative figures set in vividly coloured Arcadian landscapes; rich with symbolic, political and philosophical depths.

We will also be celebrating the life and work of David Evans ARCA RSA RSW (1942-2020) in an exhibition that highlights his preoccupation with seemingly mundane interior views, still lifes, building facades and street scenes, completed over his prolific career.

Often, Alex Malcolmson's constructions will start with a discovery, this may be a piece of timber washed ashore, a rusty washer or perhaps an old sea chart. This catalyst for the work may even become integrated into the piece or equally it could be set aside having done its job in plotting the course a work will take. Some pieces, like the carved and constructed birds are closely related to their folk art ancestors.
