Welcome to Broughty Castle Museum Broughty Castle sits imposingly at the mouth of the River Tay. Built in 1496 on a rocky promontory, it has faced many sieges and battles. Today, it houses fascinating displays on the life and times of Broughty Ferry, its people, the environment and the wildlife that live close by. The Castle has magnificent views over the river, and is only minutes away from Broughty Ferry Beach and Esplanade. It's a 'must-see' attraction if you're visiting Broughty Ferry, and offers something for everyone, with a changing programme of events, activities and displays.

We will remember the 60th anniversary of the Mona Lifeboat Disaster on Sunday when we fly the Broughty Burgh flag at half mast that day to commemorate the 8 crew aboard who were lost.

The lifeboat was responding to a call during a particularly bad storm on 8th December 1959. The capsized boat sadly turned up at Buddon with no survivors.

An official enquiry declared that the boat was seaworthy and that the crew must have been lost due to the severe weather. The boat was responding to the North Carr lightship (currently moored at City Quay) breaking its mooring and drifting due to it having no engine. The weather meant that the Arbroath and Anstruther lifeboats could not launch, leaving the Mona at Broughty Ferry as the only option. The crew of the lightship were eventually rescued by helicopter.

A model of the Mona can be seen in The McManus: Dundee's Art Gallery & Museum's Dundee & The World Gallery.

Mostly Ghostly Tours

Broughty Castle has a spectacular setting on the banks of the River Tay. A fortification was built here in 1454 by the 4th Earl of Angus and was later rebuilt by Lord Gray. Broughty Castle played a key role during an historical period called 'The Rough Wooing'.

After the Battle of Pinkie, when the Scots suffered defeat by the English, Sir Andrew Dudley headed off to capture Broughty Castle. It's owner Lord Gray was a supporter of the English and wanted Mary, Queen of Scots to marry a Protestant Englishman. The castle was surrendered but in 1550 was taken back by Scots and French forces.

General Monck, under Oliver Cromwell, attacked Broughty Castle in 1651 but such was his power in Dundee that Monck did not require the castle and it fell into disrepair.

The castle now operates as a fascinating museum and is open all year round.
