This is sculpture that expresses the things we find difficult to put into words.

We’ve had the pleasure of working with British ceramic artist Su Jameson for many years, and her quietly powerful figures continue to resonate with visitors and collectors at KMA.
Drawing on human relationships and our need for connection, Su explores vulnerability and strength, communication, belonging and the subtle exchanges that pass between us. Her sculptural figures can feel deeply personal, yet the emotions they express are wonderfully universal.

For art collectors drawn to figurative ceramic sculpture with meaning and emotional depth, Su’s work offers something to return to again and again, inviting your own memories and interpretations over time.

Here at KMA in Brighton, we’re not quite ready to let go of summer just yet. The promise of balmy sunny weather this weekend gives us every reason to hold onto it a little longer.

Dawn Stacey’s dreamlike landscapes are perfect for the season, evoking the feeling of wandering through a garden at its most abundant, surrounded by flowers, hidden corners and nature spilling freely into view.

There is something wonderfully escapist about Dawn’s world. Familiar yet imagined, it invites us to linger, lose ourselves for a moment and perhaps remember a garden, place or person of our own.

A little reminder of summer to carry with us into autumn.

Porthleven 65 (Tree) by Ashley Hanson is part of our new exhibition for those drawn to the wildness of the coast and the places we return to again and again.

For almost two decades, Porthleven has provided Ashley Hanson with an enduring subject. A small Cornish harbour where land meets sea, it is a place shaped by contrasts: shelter and exposure, permanence and change, human life and the unpredictability of nature.

Originally inspired by Cornish Modernist Peter Lanyon’s own depiction of Porthleven, Ashley Hanson has returned to the town repeatedly, finding new stories in its harbour, streets, buildings, sea and changing seasons.

All this month, Porthleven 100 exhibition celebrates the 100th painting in this remarkable series and our enduring emotional connection to place.

For anyone who has ever felt the pull of Cornwall, escaped to the coast or found themselves returning to a favourite landscape, this is an exhibition with a story that may feel wonderfully familiar.

Porthleven 100 continues at KMA Gallery, 3 Church Street, Brighton, until 2 November. Free entry.

For collectors who love the romance of traditional porcelain, Jessie Mooy brings a contemporary voice to a centuries-old tradition.

With echoes of antique figurines, Victoriana and the elegance of the 1920s, Jessie’s porcelain sculptures have the refinement and intricate detail that make historic porcelain so desirable, yet each is an original work of contemporary art.

Individually formed and meticulously decorated, no two are quite alike. Delicate features, elaborate costumes, pattern and colour reward close looking, while Jessie’s women and their animal companions introduce stories of folklore, nature and our emotional connection with the animal world.

It is this combination that makes the collection so compelling: the nostalgia and craftsmanship of traditional collectable porcelain, reimagined for today’s collector.

We’ve had such a wonderful response to our Autumn Exhibition, Porthleven 100 so far.

It has been a pleasure welcoming so many of you to the gallery and hearing which paintings you have connected with and seeing a number of Ashley Hanson’s works finding new homes.

Celebrating Ashley’s 100th painting inspired by the Cornish harbour of Porthleven, the exhibition brings together bold colour, expressive mark-making and richly textured landscapes that capture the shifting energy between land and sea.

These are paintings that reward a closer look. Layers of colour and texture reveal themselves gradually, while their wonderful sense of movement and atmosphere gives each work a distinctive presence.

As autumn arrives, the deep reds, golden yellows and rich purples running through the collection feel particularly beautiful.

If you haven’t yet experienced Porthleven 100, we would love to welcome you to KMA Gallery this October and help you discover the works that speak to you.

Moira Hazel’s work is characterised by vivid, abstracted compositions that capture the essence of a place or subject, often through a kaleidoscopic lens of colour and form.

Her compositions often explore the interplay between abstraction and reality, as she reimagines the world around her through dynamic patterns and forms. She draws inspiration from the textures and rhythms of nature- landscapes, plants, refections, rock formation, and even the shapes of buildings or pieces of fabric. This organic flow of ideas results in works that feel alive, constantly evolving and unrestrained by the boundaries of traditional realism.

There is a quiet, almost timeless presence to Alison Coaten’s sculptural figures.

Drawing on religious iconography, nature and our shared humanity, Alison creates contemplative works that feel both ancient and strikingly contemporary.

Look more closely and the beauty of the making begins to reveal itself. Smooth glazed surfaces contrast with areas of raw, exposed clay, allowing earthy tones, texture and the marks of Alison’s hand to remain visible.
