When choosing artwork for your home, it’s easy to focus on colour, size and whether a piece will complement your interior. But there’s another element that can make an artwork even more meaningful: the story behind it.
Every artwork has a history. Whether it’s inspired by a personal experience, a cultural movement, a political statement or a particular moment in time, understanding the story behind a piece can completely change the way we see it.
And that’s where moodboarding becomes particularly interesting.
Traditionally, mood boards are used in interior design to explore colour palettes, textures and visual relationships. But when we begin with an artwork, we can take the process a step further.
Rather than simply pulling colours from a painting, we can explore the world that inspired its creation.
A piece of street art might lead us towards urban photography, industrial materials and bold contrasts. A nautical painting might inspire natural textures, deep ocean blues and references to maritime history. A work rooted in fashion and popular culture might introduce unexpected combinations of colour, vintage imagery and contemporary design.
Suddenly, we’re not just creating a colour palette. We’re building an atmosphere around a story.
This approach also allows us to appreciate how an artwork can exist within a space without necessarily matching its surroundings.
After all, the most interesting interiors aren’t always the ones where everything coordinates perfectly. They’re often the ones that tell us something about the people who live there.
It gives the room a story to tell.
Which of these mood boards speaks to you?
