Brighton Fringe and Artist Open Houses throughout May have filled the city with creativity in abundance 💗 Hundreds of people have contributed to this extraordinary artwork.

Visitors have joined us from Brighton, across the UK, and from all around the world. 💗

Children, adults, artists, first-time makers, families, and friends have all left their mark on the same canvas. What began as a blank surface has become a living record of connection, creativity, and community. At the end of the-day today, the final marks were made by these wonderful visitors to the gallery. 💗

This artwork was created by hands, both small and big, making it a truly unique snapshot of the people who have passed through our doors. The Community Canvas will be auctioned to raise funds for a new art materials storage system, helping us keep workshops, creative activities, and community projects running smoothly at Liberation Art Gallery.

If you would like to place a bid and become the proud owner of this one-of-a-kind community artwork, please get in touch by sending us a direct message, emailing us, or speaking to a member of the team in the gallery.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts to all that visited who contributed 💗

What does it mean to Liberation Art Gallery when visitors choose to purchase artwork through the gallery?

- it means the world actually.

Liberation Art Gallery itself is a delicate ecosystem and a physical container for creativity, connection, and community. We are built through collaboration between our talented artists, careful curation, our visitors and collectors, local communities, creative practitioners, and qualified and regulated Art Therapists all supporting one another and holding space for one another.

In a time where many independent arts spaces are disappearing, in choosing to purchase artwork through an independent gallery like Liberation, You are helping to sustain: independent exhibition spaces, emerging artists, creative opportunities, community workshops, artist development, curation, installation, alternative education provision, accessible mental health support offered by qualified arts therapists, and the ongoing work required to keep independent arts spaces such as Liberation alive.

Thank you for your continued support. 💗

This week is Mental Health Awareness Week.

At Liberation Art Gallery, we continue advocating for accessible, trauma-informed creative spaces and the importance of access to regulated mental health professionals when people need deeper support.

Held In Process 2026 - OPEN CALL

We are seeking work that honours the act of making, pieces that are still forming, still shifting, still alive. Work that resists resolution. Work that allows space for uncertainty, change and pause.

This exhibition is about what it means to be held in the process, rather than rushed to completion.

This is not about finished work. It’s about being allowed to stay in the making.

We’re seeking original works in painting, drawing, collage, ceramics, sculpture, or mixed media for our exhibition at Liberation Art Gallery.

Submission Fee: please head to our website

Exhibition Details:

Location: Liberation Art Gallery, 38 Meeting House Lane, Brighton

Exhibition Dates: July 2026 (Exact dates TBC & chance of extension)

Submission Deadline: Wednesday 1st July 2026, 9pm (subject to change, please watch our instagram)

One of the most powerful parts of having working artists inside Liberation is that visitors don’t just see finished original artworks on a wall, they meet the person behind it. They can ask questions, hear the meaning behind the pieces, learn about process, and experience art as a conversation rather than simply a product.

As both a resident artist and workshop facilitator, Sarah Ellis also creates opportunities for others to explore intuitive painting for themselves, encouraging creativity as a form of expression, wellbeing, and connection.

What many people don’t always see when they walk into a gallery is the sheer amount of time, emotional energy, and dedication held inside a single artwork. Sarah has spent thousands of hours over the years developing her unique creative practice, techniques, and visual language, with countless hours poured into works like this incredible large-scale painting on canvas.
