As a photographer and video artist, Assaf Shoshan explores a world where borders endlessly appear and vanish, and where time is experienced differently. His portraits and landscapes evoke an enigmatic atmosphere, shrouded in mystery and unreality. Hovering between reality and fiction, Shoshan’s work carries a poetic, contemplative, yet profoundly political weight. It touches upon a fundamental human dimension: the search for identity, and the feelings of exile and belonging.

"Le Village N***e"
Installation de 78 tuiles en terre cuite avec la technique du Raku, céramique noire

« Le village n***e est une évocation à un quartier de Thaon-les-Vosges à partir de la mémoire sociale des lieux, cité ouvrière des années 40’ et du début de XXème siècle lors de l’époque de l’industrie et le développement des usines du textile dans la région.
Une légende raconte que ce quartier portait le nom « village n***e » car des indochinois habitant sur le quartier, couvraient leur façades de goudron. Selon l’histoire, les premières tuiles confectionnées étaient moulées à partir des cuisses des femmes. Ici, chaque élément était réalisé et moulé à partir des cuisses des habitants participant à la conception de l’œuvre : ouvriers, immigrés et anciens travailleurs des usines de la région. Chaque tuile est noire et a sur sa surface des mots, des récits, des phrases provenant de la rencontre avec les participants.

Le village n***e est une œuvre qui illustre la mémoire sociale, ici, trace de la condition de la classe ouvrière et de l’exil. Les cuisses sont les membres du corps qui servent à avancer, à tracer un chemin, un voyage, une destinée. »

With their own pictorial practices, these artists question how the face and the form could become the receptacles of a memory in transformation. Shifting away from a faithful representation of the subject, their works play with deformation, erasure, superposition and fragmentation to make the portrait a space where time, memory and identity meet.

« Quand l’équipe du centre culturel de Bolbec m’a invitée à déposer un dossier de candidature pour y exposer mes tableaux, je me suis tout de suite rendu sur les lieux. Je suis tombé sous le charme de l’imposant bâti du château implanté dans son parc soigneusement entretenu. C’est en empruntant le couloir que j’ai aperçu, se faisant face, les deux salles d’exposition. J’ai su que mes tableaux pourraient y trouver une place originale.
J’ai immédiatement pensé à sélectionner deux ensembles de tableaux. D’un côté j’accrocherai les paysages, de l’autre les figures humaines. Le couloir restant neutre, vide de tableaux mais présent comme un dilemme.
Après 𝑫𝒆𝒕𝒂𝒊𝒍𝒔 qui s’est tenu à Paris en mars, j’ai choisi le titre de 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒔𝒔𝒆𝒛 𝒍𝒆 𝒏𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆𝒍 ? sous sa forme interrogative. Parmi les tracasseries quotidiennes que peut l’art ? Contrairement aux idées reçues, pas plus qu’un autre, je ne vis isolé. L’art n’est pas une question de médium, c’est essentiellement ce qu’une personne ne peut pas dire autrement. L’art est ce qui nous permet de nous reconnaître comme faisant parti de la communauté des humains. »

"The human figure has always been at the heart of both Lagarrigue's artistic practice and academic research. Yet his paintings extend far beyond representation, engaging with broader questions of identity, memory, and perception. His distinctive approach to figurative painting creates intimate images that navigate the space between the personal and the universal. Many of his subjects are African Americans living in New York and Brooklyn.

Over the years, Lagarrigue has assembled a diverse gallery of portraits that can be understood as a taxonomy of the human condition. Observing and portraying those around him is as essential to his practice as reflecting on his own place within society. As art historian Patricia Koenig writes, his recent work "explores the notion of relationships in the most comprehensive way possible. [...] Extraordinary characters emerge from the layers of paint like ghostly spectres from another time, appearing in the present through a kaleidoscopic array of colours."

“Since the beginning of his career, Joseph Dadoune has developed a multidisciplinary practice spanning painting, drawing, photography, video, and installation. Working with organic, mineral, and industrial materials—including charcoal, beeswax, pigments, metallic powders, and tar—Dadoune creates evocative landscapes in which matter itself becomes a vessel of memory. Natural elements, particularly the vegetal world and water, occupy a central place in his practice. They emerge as vital forces in constant transformation, embodying both fragility and resilience, impermanence and continuity.”

“For Dayron Gonzalez, the study of human behavior quickly became the foundation of his artistic practice. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts of San Alejandro in Havana, Cuba, the artist explores the impact of the past—and, more specifically, of history—on our lives, examining how memory and inherited narratives shape our identities. Drawing inspiration from advertising posters, magazine photographs, and images found online, Gonzalez reinterprets these visual references through painting to question the notion of identity from a deep personal perspective.”

“Creation is an uncontrolled muscle,” says Arik Levy — a phrase that pulses at the core of a practice defined by intuition, material sensitivity, and the search for unseen structures. Sculptor, artist, designer, and thinker, his work transcends conventional boundaries, engaging with space, movement, and the intimate geometries of perception. Renowned for his Rock series and large-scale public sculptures, the artist works across sculpture, photography, video, scenography, installation, and design. His artistic language balances the organic and the engineered, giving form to invisible forces while remaining deeply rooted in a human-centered vision: “The world is about people, not objects.”

“Richard Butler’s portrait paintings explore the boundaries between classical representation and contemporary image-making. Combining traditional techniques with references to slow motion and freeze-frame imagery, he creates haunting figures suspended between presence and absence. Since the early 2000s, he has focused largely on portraits of his daughter, transforming personal imagery into a broader exploration of identity, memory, and the subconscious.”
