[SOON – RUE CHAPON] Opening on Saturday, October 31, a solo exhibition by Charles Freger

Charles Fréger – Silhouettes
Exhibition from October 31 to December 19, 2026
For his new solo exhibition at Les filles du calvaire, French photographer Charles Fréger brings together photographs and videos from several series spanning over a decade of artistic practice. Exploring a lesser-known aspect of his work, the exhibition focuses on silhouettes and the representation of historical narratives. Through the interplay of light and shadow, familiar figures emerge as evocative presences shaped by collective memory. Fréger invites viewers to reflect on how historical imagery is constructed, transmitted and transformed over time.

[AKAA] For the 11th edition of AKAA, the gallery is pleased to present the work of Maya Inès Touam مايا إينيس توام , in collaboration with Maison Gacha.
Through her photographic practice, Maya Inès Touam explores the circulation of images, objects and narratives across Western, Eastern and Pan-African cultures. Drawing on still life and art-historical references, she brings together objects charged with history and symbolism to compose richly layered visual narratives.
Her meticulously constructed images intertwine different times, geographies and cultural references, questioning notions of heritage, displacement and memory while allowing new, hybrid narratives to emerge.

[NEW COLLABORATION] Les filles du calvaire is pleased to announce its collaboration with French photographer Julie Joubert.

Born in 1989 and based in Paris, Julie Joubert explores portraiture at the intersection of documentary and fine art photography. Her long-term projects focus on identity, youth and representations of masculinity, revealing both the strength and vulnerability of the individuals she photographs.

Her series Patria Nostra, developed over three years of immersion within the French Foreign Legion, follows young recruits from their selection and training through to their integration into operational regiments. Looking beyond the military institution, the project explores displacement, belonging and the reconstruction of identity, bringing individual stories to the surface behind the uniformity of the bodies.

Patria Nostra, winner of the public award for the 2025 Discovery Award Louis Roederer Foundation at the 57th edition of the Rencontres d’Arles, will be presented in Julie Joubert’s first solo exhibition at Les filles du calvaire, from November 12, 2026 to January 16, 2027. Julie Joubert also received the Jury’s Special Mention at the 40th edition of the Festival international de photographie de Hyères in 2025.

[HORS LES MURS] Laia Abril presents ‘On R**e and Institutional Failure’, curated by Sara Ickow, at Int'l Center of Photography in New York from October 15, 2026, through January 11, 2027.

The exhibition focuses on the 2nd chapter of Laia Abril’s ongoing project ‘A History of Misogyny’. The Spanish artist examines different forms of violence against women throughout history. Weaving together images, compiled testimonies, archival materials, select objects, and installations with sound and video, the exhibition investigates how gender-based stereotypes, coupled with worldwide prejudices and misconceptions, have contributed to a systemic r**e culture that persists today. By focusing on institutions, Abril aims to avoid narratives of victim-blaming, instead addressing the on-going problem of social accountability that has allowed offenders and enablers alike to avoid justice.

[FOCUS ON] Lore Stessel (born in 1987) is a Belgian artist based in Brussels, whose practice unfolds at the intersection of photography and painting, with the body and movement at its core.

Trained in both disciplines, Lore has developed a singular technique, applying silver gelatin emulsion by hand directly onto canvas. The process lends her images a tactile, almost physical presence, blurring the boundaries between photographic image and painterly surface. Her subjects are dancers, captured away from the stage and outside the conventions of performance, in moments when movement becomes spontaneous and unguarded.

Each work is unique, holding onto the trace of a gesture rather than simply recording it. Through blurred silhouettes, suspended movements and fleeting encounters between bodies, Stessel turns photography into a sensitive memory of movement, revealing the body as a direct and instinctive language of emotion.

[RUE CHAPON] Currently on view a solo exhibition by Zhuo Qi齐倬, at 21 rue Chapon until October 24, 2026.

We Cannot Stop Birds of Omen from Flying Over Our Heads, but Perhaps We Can Prevent Them from Nesting There.

The exhibition brings together three major strands developed by the artist Zhuo Qi in recent years: the Bubble Game series; a large column-shaped installation composed of Mohele and moulds for children’s toys; and the work Balancing Ball. Together, these works create a space situated somewhere between repair, play, ritual, and archaeological fiction. Zhuo Qi does not seek to construct a comprehensive historical narrative. Rather, he brings together fragmentary images, objects drawn from popular traditions, children’s toys, ceramic structures, and interventions in glass, allowing new relationships to emerge from their mutual misunderstandings.

[RUE DES FILLES DU CALVAIRE] Currently on view, “Earth and Sky”, a solo exhibition by S U N G I M L E N G E Y A, at 17 rue des Filles du Calvaire until October 24, 2026.

The works in “Earth and Sky” were conceived in the wake of the passing of the artist’s mother. Faced with this loss, Sungi found herself reflecting not on the finality of death, but on the many ways a life continues. What remains of a person once they are gone? Where does their
presence reside? For the artist, the answer lies not in memory alone, but in influence: the gestures passed down through generations, the habits of making and thinking that quietly shape those who follow. In many ways, this understanding echoes the reflection of Kenyan philosopher John Mbiti, who observed that “the living, the dead, and the unborn are bound together in one continuous chain of existence.” Within this continuum, the life of one person extends outward through the lives of others, carried forward in actions, ideas, and acts of care that continue to shape the world long after the body has passed.
