Anastasia Kolas is the Artist in Residence at Künstlerhof Frohnau for the months of July and August 2026. Across disciplines, Anastasia’s work explores what she call “aesthetics of disappointment” or the homogenizing forces of globalized modernity.

During her residency at KHF, Anastasia’s been working on a new film project exploring emotional lives of archives. The project incorporates documentary films made by her grandmother, the Soviet-Belarusian filmmaker Elena Kolas, and is supported by Canada Council for the Arts.

As part of KHF Open Studios on September 5 and 6, 2026, Anastasia Kolas will present her recent video work Setup / Upset (2026). Through imagined conversations at the European Parliament in Brussels and around the grounds of Acropolis in Athens, the video explores the relationship between grand narratives of European identity and the everyday labour that sustains these monumental sites.

The guest studio at Künstlerhof Frohnau presents works by Volodymyr Budnikov and Ray Kaczynski.

Volodymyr Budnikov (*1947, Ukraine) works in painting, drawing, and spatial installation. Since 2022, he has been based primarily at Künstlerhof Frohnau in Berlin, where he continues his artistic practice.

Ray Kaczynski (*1960, USA) is a composer, percussionist, performer, and sound artist whose work bridges experimental music, performance, and sound art. He lives and works at Künstlerhof Frohnau in Berlin.

Eine Videoinstallation, entwickelt von der Performerin und Soundkünstlerin meline saoirse gemeinsam mit der Filmemacherin und bildenden Künstlerin .art . Meline Saoirse war Artist in Residence am KHF, Claudia Bachmann lebt und arbeitet seit vielen Jahren hier. Die Installation entfaltet sich als rituelle Performance und untersucht die Beziehung zwischen Körper, Klang, Erinnerung und Wahrnehmung. Durch Bewegung, Stimme, Vibration und symbolische Handlungen entsteht ein konzentrierter Raum, in dem körperliche Präsenz, innere Bilder und sinnliche Erfahrung miteinander in Beziehung treten. Ausgehend von Tanz, somatischer Praxis, Sound und rituellen Formen lädt die Arbeit die Besucher*innen zu einem stillen Prozess von Aufmerksamkeit, Transformation und Loslassen ein.

With:
A video installation developed by performer and sound artist Meline Saoirse together with filmmaker and visual artist Claudia Bachmann. Meline has been artist in residence at KHF, Claudia lives and works here since many years. The installation unfolds as a ritual-performance exploring the relationship between body, sound, memory and perception. Through movement, voice, vibration and symbolic actions, the work creates a concentrated space in which physical presence, inner images and sensory experience come into relation. Drawing on dance, somatic practice, sound and ritual forms, it invites viewers into a quiet process of attention, transformation and release.

In Saba Alizadeh s Live-Performance "A Thousand Bodies Live Within Me" geht es um Brüche und Erschütterungen der vergangenen Jahren: Kriege, Aufstände, Vertreibung und die leisen psychischen Nachbeben, die sie hinterlassen. Sie erzählt von Spuren und unsichtbaren Strömungen, verwurzelt in den Realitäten Irans. Durch manipulierte Field Recordings, Archivklänge, bearbeitete Stimmen und den transformierten Schrei der Kamancheh verwebt Alizadeh eine Klanglandschaft, in der persönliche Erinnerung und kollektive Geschichte untrennbar miteinander verbunden sind. Die Performance entfaltet sich als lebendige Vibration: ein Raum, in dem Zittern zu Bewegung wird, Stille zu Spannung, und ferne Brüche noch lange nach dem Moment ihres Geschehens im Körper nachhallen.

With:
Saba Alizadeh’s live performance “A Thousand Bodies Live Within Me” explores the ruptures and upheavals of recent years: wars, uprisings, displacement, and the quiet psychological aftershocks they leave behind. She tells of traces and invisible currents rooted in the realities of Iran. Through manipulated field recordings, archival sounds, processed voices, and the transformed cry of the kamancheh, Alizadeh weaves a soundscape in which personal memory and collective history are inextricably linked. The performance unfolds as a living vibration: a space in which tremors become movement, silence becomes tension, and distant ruptures continue to reverberate in the body long after the moment they occurred.

Seit der zweiten Ausgabe von WALDEN begleiten Otto Oscar Hernandez und Hyo Jin Shin das Festival durch performative Interventionen und fungieren als Wegweiser*innen, Botschafter*innen und wandelnde Figuren innerhalb seiner Landschaft. Otto Oscar Hernandez Ruiz ist ein in Kuba geborener Künstler und Architekt, dessen Arbeit sich zwischen Malerei, Zeichnung und Performance bewegt und sich häufig mit der Wahrnehmung und Transformation von Umgebungen und Landschaften auseinandersetzt. SHIN Hyo Jin ist eine in Berlin lebende Musikerin, Performerin und Kulturkuratorin, deren Arbeit auf traditioneller koreanischer Musik und Performance-Praktiken aufbaut und gleichzeitig zeitgenössische Ausdrucksformen entwickelt. Gemeinsam schaffen sie performative Situationen, die sich zwischen Klang, Gestik, Kostüm und ritualisierter Präsenz bewegen.

Since the second edition of WALDEN, Otto Oscar Hernandez Ruiz and SHIN Hyo Jin have accompanied the festival through performative interventions, acting as guides, messengers and shifting figures within its landscape. Otto Oscar Hernandez Ruiz is a Cuban-born artist and architect whose practice moves between painting, drawing and performance, often exploring the perception and transformation of environments and landscapes. SHIN Hyo Jin is a Berlin-based musician, performer and cultural curator whose work draws on traditional Korean music and performance practices while developing contemporary forms of expression. Together, they create performative situations that move between sound, gesture, costume and ritualized presence.

Mina Mohsenis Multimedia-Installation „Golgonooza in Isfahan“ verbindet Videoprojektion, Licht, reaktive Sensoren, Ton und ein physisches Modell. Die Arbeit untersucht die Stadt als vielschichtigen Raum geprägt von historischen Strukturen und alltäglichen menschlichen Gesten. Ausgehend von William Blakes mythischer Stadt „Golgonooza“ verbindet das Projekt Live-APIs aus Isfahan, wo die Künstlerin zuvor lebte und forschte, und Berlin als ihren derzeitigen Wohnsitz. Aus diesen Daten entsteht eine neue imaginäre Karte, die verschiedene zeitliche und räumliche Ebenen miteinander zu eine ichm inneren und symbolischen Raum verwebt: ein sich ständig wandelndes Feld, das von Wahrnehmung, Macht, Nutzung und Erinnerung geprägt ist. Anstatt die Stadt als einheitliche Identität darzustellen, versteht „Golgonooza in Isfahan“ sie als Ort des Konflikts, der Fragmentierung, der Beständigkeit und ständig neu entstehender Möglichkeiten.

With:
Mina Mohseni’s multimedia installation “Golgonooza in Isfahan” combines video projection, light, reactive sensors, sound, and a physical model. The work explores the city, shaped by historical structures and everyday human gestures. Drawing on William Blake’s mythical city “Golgonooza,” the project connects live APIs from Isfahan—where the artist previously lived and conducted research—and Berlin, her current place of residence. From this data emerges a new imaginary map that weaves together various temporal and spatial levels into an inner and symbolic space: a constantly shifting field shaped by perception, power, use, and memory. Rather than portraying the city as a unified identity, “Golgonooza in Isfahan” conceives of it as a place of conflict, fragmentation, continuity, and constantly emerging possibilities.

Mariechen Danz (irisch/deutsch) und Gediminas Žygus (litauisch) arbeiten in den Bereichen Stimme, Klang und Installation. Danz’ künstlerische Praxis erforscht den Körper als Ort des Wissens und der Weitergabe, greift dabei auf mündlich überlieferte Geschichte zurück und belebt ihre skulpturalen Umgebungen oft durch gesprochene und gesungene Performances. Žygus, Künstler und Komponist, schafft Klangstrukturen, die sich zwischen Erzählung, Atmosphäre und körperlicher Erfahrung bewegen. Für WALDEN werden sie eine performative Geste zwischen Gesang und Geschichtenerzählen beisteuern – das Werk, das aus ihrer laufenden Zusammenarbeit hervorgeht, vereint Rhythmus und narrative Fragmente und eröffnet einen Raum, in dem Klang zu einer Form verkörperten Wissens und gemeinsamer Aufmerksamkeit wird.

With:

Mit:
In Pressured Bodies wird Druck als generative Kraft verstanden, die durch die vielen Körper, Schwingungen und materiellen Reaktionen des Waldes wirkt. Die Arbeit folgt Kiefernharz als ausgeschiedener und angesammelter Substanz, die zwischen geschmolzenen, elastischen und spröden Zuständen wechselt. Eine summende Stimme, erzeugt durch die Vibration der Stimmbänder, trifft auf kleine Klangquellen und tensile Skulpturen, wobei der menschliche Körper aus einer weiteren Ökologie der Resonanz heraus getragen wird.
Eleni Tongidous Arbeit befasst sich mit materiellen Prozessen, räumlichem Gedächtnis und infrastruktureller Kraft und bildet instabile Felder, in denen menschliche Präsenz ein Rhythmus unter vielen ist.

In Pressured Bodies, pressure is approached as a generative force moving through the forest’s many bodies, vibrations, and material responses. The work follows pine resin as a secreted and accumulated substance, shifting between molten, elastic, and brittle states. A buzzing voice, produced through the vibration of the vocal cords, meets small sound sources and tensile sculptures, where the human body is carried from within a wider ecology of resonance.
Eleni Tongidou’s work attends to material processes, spatial memory, and infrastructural force, forming unstable fields where human presence is one rhythm among many.
