ANDERS KJELLESVIK - CONCEPTUAL ROMANCE (28 June - 24 August 2024)

Don’t miss our opening today from 6-9 pm! We look forward to welcoming you!

The show celebrates two decades of these ludic art explorations, translating photographic images into a less figurative language that focuses
on the introspective aspect of the journeys. Inspired by the song of the same name by Norwegian singer and writer Jenny Hval, the title
„Conceptual Romance“ refers to the sophisticated relationship between material and matter, showing how the latter reveals itself through
the pictorial fabric —softly and gradually, yet with a will of its own. Out of this romance the painting is being born, and Kjellesvik assists its
birth with patience and curiosity. „The original wound, the origin of the world.“

Klaus Liebig’s artistic journey began in the Black Forest, a picturesque mountain region in Ger- many, where the painter moved after finishing his studies at the Art Academy in Stuttgart. There, at the source of the Danube and Neckar rivers, the artist began painting his first landscapes. The cubist-inspired compositions of his early works evolved into enigmatic dreamscapes, imbued with profound personal significance. Liebig‘s deep connection to nature is evident in his distinctive vi- sual language, which deftly interweaves landscape elements with abstract forms.

Just in time for the release of Beyonce’s new album we present this work by , which she created exclusively for our booth at Expo Chicago.

The tapestry Flawless is a homage to Beyoncé and her song „Flawless“ (stylized as „***Flawless“) from her self-titled fifth studio album (2013). Knowles wrote the track with Rashad Muhammad, Terius Nash, Chauncey Hollis and Raymond DeAndre Martin.
In this song, she opposes , in reference to her own childhood - aggressively and angrily against the discrimination of girls. „ ... anyone that says, ‚Oh that is disrespectful,‘ just imagine the person that hates you. Imagine a person that doesn’t believe in you. And look in the mirror and say, ‚Bow down, bitch‘ and I guarantee you feel gangsta! So listen to the song from that point of view again if you didn’t like it before....“

But why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage
And we don’t teach boys the same?
We raise girls to see each other as competitors
Not for jobs or for accomplishments
Which I think can be a good thing
But for the attention of men
We teach girls that they cannot be sexual beings
In the way that boys are
Feminist: the person who believes in the social
Political, and economic equality of the sexes…“

Cordenier highly values the process of spontaneous collaboration with nature, the transition from drawing to painting unfolds in the studio, carefully overseen by the artist. In this space, she engages in the process of conceptual transformation of the landscape, opting for the medium of embroidery on canvas. Cordenier’s interest in embroidery was sparked by the search for an alternative to oil paint that could make her paintings lighter in both mass and materiality. To transform the patterns from her drawings, the artist employs transparent cotton, turning sporadic lines into subtle stitches. Hand-dyed silk imparts a sense of translucence to the works, metamorphosing the landscape into an endless field replete with visual possibilities.
