GALERIE FÜR KLASSISCHE UND ZEITGENÖSSISCHE FOTOGRAFIE

Die Bildhalle, im Jahre 2013 von Mirjam Cavegn gegründet und eine der heute angesehensten Galerien für Fotografie in der Schweiz, stellt sich bewusst der Verantwortung einer langen Schweizer Tradition gegenüber der Fotografie und ihrer Verbreitung als künstlerisches Medium und vertritt entsprechend konsequent herausragende Positionen des 20. Im Oktober 2020 eröffnet die Bildhalle einen zweiten Standort in Amsterdam. Ziel ist es, die bestehenden Beziehungen zu holländischen und europäischen Kunden zu festigen und auszubauen. Die Galerie wird in Holland eine Auswahl von holländischen und internationalen Künstlern und Künstlerinnen ausstellen. Im Wechselspiel zwischen ausgewählten etablierten Vertretern der klassischen Fotografie und denen einer jüngeren Generation, die das Medium permanent zu erweitern versuchen, gestaltet Mirjam Cavegn ein ambitioniertes Galerieprogramm, mit dem Anspruch, durch Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen sowie internationale Messebeteiligungen die Wahrnehmung und Anerkennung künstlerischer Fotografie positiv zu beeinflussen.

GALLERY FOR CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY PHOTOGRAPHY

Bildhalle, founded by Mirjam Cavegn in 2013 and one of today’s most respected galleries for photography in Switzerland, deliberately takes on the responsibility of a long-standing Swiss tradition regarding photography and its distribution as an artistic medium. Thus, it represents outstanding classic and contemporary positions with the necessary consequence. In October 2020, Bildhalle will run a second gallery in Amsterdam, thus consolidating its good relations in the Dutch and European markets. The gallery will show a well curated selection of Dutch and international artists – both young talents and established photographers. In the interplay between selected established photographers of the 20th Century and those of a younger generation that aims to keep extending the medium, Mirjam Cavegn shapes an ambitious gallery program with the objective to positively influence the reception and recognition of artistic photography through solo and group exhibitions as well as international art fair participations and publishing high quality photo books.

Jeffrey Conley is one of the world’s most renowned contemporary landscape photographers. Whether in the United States, Iceland, Japan, New Zealand or the Engadine in Switzerland – his sublime images do not depict the landscape; they reveal nature, experienced as a spiritual place.

Ansel Adams, one of the most important landscape photographers in the medium’s history, clearly indicated in his personal letters that since his experience of nature was fundamentally mystical, his most persistent artistic problem was how to convert that experience into physical evidence. The meditative radiance of Conley’s photographs is a logical consequence of his focused and profoundly contemplative approach. His treatment of perspective, scale and lighting yields images of unparalleled simplicity and tranquility.

Simone Kappeler – nature vivante

A closer look at Simone Kappeler’s nature vivante, currently on view at Kunstmuseum Thurgau.
Moving between cyanotypes, Polaroids, X-rays and infrared photography, the exhibition brings together works created through decades of experimentation with analogue photographic processes.
Delicate, fleeting and at times almost otherworldly, Kappeler’s images invite us to slow down and look more closely at what so easily goes unnoticed.

Those in a hurry tend to overlook them: the grasses, wildflowers and butterflies along the wayside. Photographer Simone Kappeler (*1952 in Frauenfeld), however, pauses precisely here. She captures these enchanting yet irretrievably fleeting moments on film and paper. What we see are familiar moments that, in this solo exhibition, become a moving homage to the transient magic of our world.
The exhibition title « nature vivante » – living nature – draws on the tradition of the nature morte, or still life. While the classical still life depicts arranged, seemingly motionless or transient objects, Kappeler places life itself at the centre – life that is constantly striving towards renewal. For more than half a century, the artist has experimented with analogue cameras and a wide range of photographic techniques. Her cyanotypes, Polaroids, X-rays and infrared photographs reveal the world in all its delicate transience, poetic and seemingly removed from time. Captured during long walks, these bodies of work bring into view the microcosm of local meadows and woodland edges. At the same time, Kappeler reminds us how worthy of protection these threatened habitats are – and that their continued existence also depends on our attentiveness.

We are delighted to announce the presentation of Simone Kappeler’s stunning new artist book Handwurz und Zittergras at Kunstmuseum Thurgau.

Together with publicist Nadine Olonetzky, Simone Kappeler will present her new publication and offer insights into the process of creating a book – from photography and artistic vision to publishing and the art of bookmaking.

The artist book Handwurz und Zittergras will be available for purchase during the event and in our bookshop.

CASPER FAASSEN – RECOLLECTION

We are delighted to welcome our guest speaker, Dr. Michaela Oberhofer, Curator of African and Oceanic Art & Deputy Head of the Curatorial Department at Museum Rietberg, as well as the artist Casper Faassen, at the opening.

ReCollection forms the second chapter of Bildhalle’s two-part presentation of Casper Faassen.
The longstanding project grew out of the artist’s profound interest in collecting, memory and the value we assign to objects.

Through a process Faassen calls “ReCollecting”, he traces dispersed cultural objects and reimagines them through his distinctive visual language, examining how Western museum collections have been formed and how cultural authority has been historically constructed.

While the colonial history of Faassen’s native Netherlands forms an important point of reference,
ReCollection continually evolves in response to the places in which it is presented. Faassen researches local collections and histories, creating connections that bring wider questions of collecting, ownership and restitution into a specific context. In Switzerland, his research has encompassed institutions, collections and freeports, from a stolen Modigliani concealed in a Geneva freeport to looted paintings and smuggled antiquities.

The exhibition runs until 21 November 2026.
