MAI 36 GALERIE Mai 36 Galerie focuses on trading and presenting international contemporary art (painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video, film and installation).

Our exhibition program is directed at the works of artists preoccupied with the fundamental questions of art, beginning with significant statements of art after 1945, their roots going back to the sixties and seventies (especially Pop-Art, Minimal-Art and Conceptual-Art). We are mainly interested in artists engaged in unearthing art-immanent themes such as the perception of art, art as a form of communication, art as a system, as well as art questioning the importance and function of art in our society: the outlooks of individual artists stimulating and encouraging reflections on the experiences and perceptions of our age. We are intent on working in close collaboration with the artists and presenting their works continuously in individual exhibitions, publications and at the international art fairs of Basel, Madrid, London, New York and Miami Beach. We hold about six exhibitions a year, presenting both national and international artists and hope to surprise the cultural scene of Zurich with a number of interesting projects. Mai 36 Galerie sees itself as an address for both known and unknown artists and wants to encourage the exchange of individual exhibitions between an autonomous group of international galleries.

In Markus Saile’s work, structure and depth emerge through the superimposition of gestures, sweeps, and loops. As the process unfolds, colours accumulate along the edges of the picture surface, while traces of successive layers converge into lines of demarcation. The wooden panels establish the paintings’ physical boundaries, containing the pictorial field within their limits. Yet within the painted surface, spatial relationships remain unstable, suggesting a sense of openness that extends beyond the edges and into the surrounding space.

On view through 30.05.2027

The group exhibition Once Upon a Time in America at Pavilhão Julião Sarmento (Pavilhão Julião Sarmento) explores the influence of American mythology and culture on postwar contemporary art, reflecting a world shaped by cinema, urban space, Minimalism, and Realism. At its center is Rita McBride’s monumental sculpture Arena 3003 (1997–ongoing) which has been recreated in Lisbon through a collaborative process together with architecture students and professors from the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa.

Mai 36 Galerie is pleased to announce the representation of Raphael Hefti (*1978, Biel/Bienne, Switzerland; based in Zurich).

Transforming industrial processes into extraordinary works of art, Raphael Hefti has developed a practice in which failure becomes a catalyst for discovery. Among the most internationally recognised Swiss artists of his generation, Hefti challenges the boundaries of what is physically and technically possible. Working closely with specialised craftspeople, engineers and industrial manufacturers, he pushes materials and production methods beyond their conventional limits. His sculptures and installations reveal unexpected properties of matter, where precision and unpredictability, control and chance coexist.

Raphael Hefti is the recipient of the prestigious Paul Boesch Art Prize 2026, he has established an extensive international exhibition history spanning nearly two decades. His work has been presented at leading institutions including Kunsthaus Zürich, Kunsthalle Basel, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Rotterdam), Kunstmuseum St.Gallen, Fondation Vincent van Gogh (Arles), Nottingham Contemporary, CAPC Musée d’Art Contemporain (Bordeaux), South London Gallery, Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève, Camden Arts Centre (London), Lafayette Anticipations (Paris) and Fondation Carmignac (Porquerolles).

He has participated in major international exhibitions, including Desert X (California), the Industrial Art Biennial Labin (Croatia), and the Dhaka Art Summit (Bangladesh). His latest permanent public commissions include works for the new University Children’s Hospital Zurich (Herzog & de Meuron), the Swiss National Bank in Bern, and SwissRe in Zurich.

In 2026, he presented his first solo exhibition with Mai 36 Galerie in Zurich.

The Spengler Collection contains numerous works that aim to elicit direct sensory experiences through looking, listening, or active engagement. The artworks are made tangible through touch, sound, and contrasts
of color and form. The goal is for visitors to become aware of their own bodies - their own physical presence - during the process of perception. Through the sensory stimulus exerted by the artwork, the viewer
becomes part of the piece. This self-perception is intentional on the part of the artists; they thus embed the act of sensory perception into the artworks as a bodily experience.

In the works on paper by 佃 弘樹, collage becomes a passage through successive material and technological states. For the monotype based works, the artist scratches patterns into an aluminium plate, paints it with oil colour and thinner, and runs it through a press. He then works into the unique impression with pencil, charcoal, water-soluble coloured pencil, oil pastel and acrylic ink, using brushes and airbrush. This physical layer is combined with a digital collage made from scans of his drawings, Illustrator-generated shapes, his own photographs and images found online. Printed directly onto the acrylic glazing, it hovers above the paper; light entering the narrow interval casts shifting shadows.

03/10/2026

Markus Saile works with gestures of concealment and revelation whose dynamism and engagement with the picture field evoke cinematic procedures: the gaze is held back, redirected, then partially released and opened up again. Within the exhibition’s arrangements, it can leap from one painting to another. What becomes visible in the traces of the painterly and material processes always appears in relation to what eludes the gaze.

Visiting Gowoon Lee’s temporary studio in Zurich.

For Gowoon Lee television represents a fleeting form of collective memory. Lee navigates the tension between ultra-recognizable images and abstraction by isolating objects from familiar cartoon narratives.
The ‘singular’ images that are depicted in Lee’s work function almost like words in her visual language, enabling the arrangement or combination of the paintings to create larger narratives.

By incorporating universal motifs that resonate across different cultures and backgrounds, Lee creates a shared emotional language, shaping individual encounters into a sense of unity and encouraging dialogue and reflection on common human experiences.
