Esther Mathis‘ work group „Liminal Bones“ is on view in a solo presentation in the foyer of Kunst Museum Winterthur Kunst Museum Winterthur Reinhart am Stadtgarten until September 6. Together with Klodin Erb, Esther Mathis has been invited by the curators Konrad Bitterli Konrad Bitterli and Andrea Lutz .ealu to present a focused solo show in the new exhibition format „3 x 2: Fokus Winterthur“.

Join us for a conversation with Berlin-based artist Stefan Knauf on the occasion of his current show „As Hope Is Last to Die“ on Wednesday September 23 at 7pm Livie Gallery in Zurich.
For his first solo exhibition at the gallery, Stefan Knauf presents a new group of sculptures made from hydroformed, hot-dip galvanized steel, taking the forms of saguaro, agave, and fig cacti, alongside a series of small paintings shown here for the first time. Set within an immersive, site-specific landscape of painted walls and carpeted floors, the exhibition reflects on hope as a way of orienting oneself toward an uncertain future. In Knauf’s works, hope emerges as a field of tension between persistence and resistance, possibility and stasis—an enduring force that keeps the future open even when certainty begins to erode.

Art&Newport ART&NEWPORT presents « Hope Deferred », Austin Eddy’s first major sculptural installation and his first solo exhibition in New England. Installed in the Barn at the Norman Bird Sanctuary, Middletown, Rhode Island, this exhibition brings contemporary art into dialogue with the sanctuary’s landscape.
Best known for paintings distinguished by brilliant color, layered textures, and recurring bird motifs, Eddy has long used birds as poetic stand-ins for memory, loss, and the fleeting passage of time. Here, the bird takes on a new dimension. What began as a single sculpture has grown into a menagerie of 107 birds in ceramic, aluminum, wood, plaster, and bronze, ranging from intimate to monumental in scale...
“For this exhibition, they will occupy the same table, same space, same life, existing as a group and almost relinquish their responsibility as an individual,” Eddy says. “Through this togetherness and focus on the unknown, I am hoping to take a closer look at the kindness of living.”

Sarah Bogner’s institutional solo exhibition „Bildertiere“ is on view Kebbel Villa | Opf. Künstlerhaus in Schwandorf, Germany, until August 23.

The exhibition « Bildertiere » (Picture Animals) begins with a double return: spatially, to a place in southern Germany that Sarah Bogner associates with her origins and her family’s pictorial heritage; and temporally, to an art history whose forms she is reexamining. At the Kebbel Villa, she presents paintings in which it is not animals that appear, but rather Bildertiere: beings that emerge from color, form, line, and art-historical memory.

Opening this weekend: Sarah Bogner | Bildertiere
Kebbel Villa, Germany

After her solo booth Liste Art Fair Basel we are delighted to invite you to the institutional solo exhibition by Sarah Bogner Kebbel Villa | Opf. Künstlerhaus in Schwandorf, Germany.

In her paintings, Sarah Bogner (born in 1980 in Munich, lives in Vienna) often focuses on depictions of horses, which, however, are not to be understood as naturalistic representations but rather function as elements within a complex painterly structure. By creating pictorial spaces in which figurative and abstract elements overlap and balance one another, the artist explores the relationships between form, color, and spatial arrangement.
These motifs serve as starting points for her painterly processes, in which condensation, superimposition, and dissolution all play an equal role.
The centerpiece of the exhibition is a trio of large-format paintings created specifically for the exhibition hall on the ground floor of the Kebbel Villa. This trio enters into a dialogue with other works in which Bogner experiments with different scales and formats.

Last days on view: Esther Mathis | Shapes of Tenderness / Shapes of Tension

For her third solo exhibition at Live Gallery, Esther Mathis (b. 1985) has created a series of works that encircle ideas of softness and strength, carapace and core. Each piece shows Mathis’s customary approach of metamorphosing commonplace industrial materials with light-handed yet assured gestures, into things of delicate beauty; carefully de-forming their functionality to create new forms in her ongoing inquiries into the nature of materials and the poetics of transformation.

On view until end of this week May 29 at Livie Gallery, Zurich.

STEFAN KNAUF | AS HOPE IS LAST TO DIE
Hope has accompanied us ever since we have been able to imagine a future. It is not a modern invention but an anthropological constant — a quiet, often contradictory force running through myths, religions, political move-ments, and artistic expression. But why do we hope?
Hope is less a feeling than a particular way of orienting oneself toward the future. It arises where the present is experienced as insufficient without being considered closed. Embedded within it is the assumption that what is, is not all there is. This assumption is neither certain nor inevitable — more a posture we adopt in order not to remain fixed in what already exists. Especially in a time marked by crises and wars, where certainty erodes and political as well as ecological orders begin to falter, this attitude gains in weight. Not as a solution, but as the precondition for continuing to think at all. Hope shifts the gaze. It allows us to carry on, even when much remains unclear. It operates within the indeterminate, without resolving it. Therein lies its power — less in what it promises than in what it leaves open. It enables action in the face of uncertainty, engagement without any guarantee of success. At the same time, it carries within it a moment of excess: a not-yet that points beyond what is given and makes change imaginable in the first place.
Hope does not only keep possibilities open — it also holds onto them. Expectations persist even when their foundations have become fragile. Conditions endure even after they have long begun to waver. What promises movement can slide into a kind of stasis. In the works of Stefan Knauf, precisely this tension crystallises: resistance and rigidity converge, persistence tips into standstill. …
