Galerie Gmurzynska Galerie Gmurzynska: Classic Modern and Contemporary Masters since 1965 Moritz.

Galerie Gmurzynska is one of the top galleries in the world with locations in Zurich, Zug and St. In 2005, while celebrating its fortieth anniversary, Galerie Gmurzynska opened its spacious new headquarters in Switzerland, relocating entirely from Germany. At the same time that it was launching its new flagship location at the famed Paradeplatz in the heart of Zurich, the gallery was also enlarging and updating its two already existing locations in Zug and fabled St.

Between 1965-67, Picasso completed a series of paintings, drawings, and lithographs based on the theme of the mythical God Pan and scenes of Bacchanalia.

In the present work, the painter has been transformed into a flute player; the flute has replaced the paintbrush and music has replaced painting.

Take a closer look at this work by Pablo Picasso titled ‘Portrait aux moustaches’. Throughout his later years, Picasso returned repeatedly to the moustached figure as a central expression of his fascination with the Musketeer.

Once held within an extraordinary cultural circle, this work belonged to Lucia Bosè, a leading figure of Italian Neorealist cinema, and Luis Miguel Dominguín, the legendary matador of the 1940s and 50s. A close friend of Pablo Picasso, Dominguín spent time with the artist in the south of France and Picasso designed his matador costume in the 1970s. The work was exhibited in a travelling show of their collection.

In 1975, Wifredo Lam plunged into ceramic work with an almost frenetic energy, fascinated by the mineral clay and the art of fire. Lam’s ceramics have the elegance and uniqueness of true works of art; they are unconventional and unique.

Making ceramics allowed Lam to give concrete form to the germinating, life-filled designs we see in his paintings and engravings as they become objectified, so to speak, in the terracotta.

There was a time when Picasso and Lam were regularly part of the same group shows at the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York, meaning in the same exhibition space that Gallery Gmurzynska occupies today.

Picasso lauded Lam, saying “Lam, I think that you have my blood in you, you must be one of my relations, a primo, a cousin.” (1938).

Between 1958 and 1959, Wifredo Lam worked on a series depicting a highly abstracted interplay of cane stalks. This series, collectively known as “La Brousse,” represents the height of development of Lam’s pictorial language of the 1940s, With a nod to the gestural brushwork of the Abstract Expressionists, “La Brousse” places Lam strongly in line with the currents of modern art.

Take a closer look at this small, specialized work that is part of a series of gold sculptures based on Picasso’s sketches. Created in 1968, this work was a collaboration between Picasso and François Hugo, a goldsmith known for working with artists to create gold jewelry and sculptures. It is Francois‘s collaboration with Picasso that put the goldsmith on the map.

The first piece François worked on with Picasso was a plate based on the Spaniard’s Le Dormeur ceramic platter. Picasso was so “enchanted by the result”, says Nicolas (François’ grandson), that he ordered more plates of different designs. “But he didn’t want to commercialise them,” he says. “He kept them under his bed, hidden like a treasure.”

Now on view at the , Sea, Pop & Sun brings together major figures of Pop Art and reflects on a historical moment in which new social movements, changing moral frameworks, and the rise of the leisure society reshaped everyday life and visual culture. Galerie Gmurzynska is pleased to have loaned works by Marjorie Strider for the exhibition.

A key figure associated with Pop Art, Strider is celebrated for her bold and playful compositions that challenged conventions of painting and representation. Her works remain a distinctive contribution to the visual language of postwar American art.

“Following the finissage of highly lauded retrospective Wifredo Lam: When I Don’t Sleep, I Dream, Galerie Gmurzynska brings several significant Lam works previously exhibited at MoMA into a more intimate gallery context. A rare Étude pour La Jungle from 1943 sits among masterpieces from Lam’s estate, including part of his indigenous art collection, while Picasso is represented through works that include rare frescos from his 1918 honeymoon in Biarritz and six oil paintings. The museum gave Lam institutional scale. This exhibition gives him dialogue, proximity, and historical return.”

takes an in-depth look at the the dialogue between Pablo Picasso and Wifredo Lam, as their relationship was not simply a convenient pairing of two famous names. Their friendship was affectionate, generative, and artistically consequential.
