Open Studio is a Canadian Artist-Run Centre dedicated to contemporary print.

Open Studio is a non-profit, charitable organization that supports artists in the creation and exhibition of contemporary print in an open-minded, safe and collaborative environment. Our facility supports various printmaking techniques, including screenprinting, lithography and intaglio/relief printing. We open the door to printmaking through our studio facilities, education programming, residencies, scholarships, exhibitions and public art installations. Our vision is to shape the exploration of print as essential, dynamic, and relevant to contemporary culture and creative thought.

Missed Nuit Blanche? There’s still time to see ‘15 minutes of your time’ by Jules Dufresne (✨ Jules Dufresne ✨). Our shop window installation will be up for the next month.

Featuring 180 multilayer screenprints hanging in long, vertical banners, the installation brings to mind the endless scroll of a phone screen.

👀 What do we miss when we’re busy scrolling?

To explore this, Jules recorded the timestamps of 15 minutes of Instagram scrolling, then took a 15-minute walk, photographing what they saw at those same moments. 📱 They layered these digital traces over photographs of the physical world, bringing the two together in a series of screenprints.

💭 The work invites us to think about where our attention goes, how much time we spend online, and what we might overlook in the world around us.

‘15 minutes of your time’ also complements our Main Gallery exhibition, ‘Memory Echoes in You’ by Dana Tosic ().

Currently on display in the Open Studio Shop is Brian Groombridge’s ‘Comets Tell of Great Distances Travelled’ (1989), presented alongside his current exhibition, ‘New Models for Measurement’, at the AGO - Art Gallery of Ontario🪐

This folio of five screenprints traces the dates when Halley’s Comet was visible from Earth. Groombridge created the work in 1989 as a Guest Artist at Open Studio, where it was printed with Lily Yung.

The original edition was 20. This set is Open Studio Proof II, the second of two Open Studio Proofs assigned to the Open Studio print archive. Each print bears the embossed Open Studio chop in the lower left corner.

What is lost in mindless scrolling?

To explore this question, Jules Dufresne recorded the timestamps of 15 minutes of Instagram scrolling, then took a 15-minute walk, photographing what they encountered at those same moments. Through screenprinting, these digital traces are layered over photographs of the physical world, bringing online consumption into direct contact with lived experience.

The work examines how constant connectivity reshapes attention, drawing focus away from the subtle details of everyday life and making moments of stillness increasingly difficult to inhabit. Installed as dozens of vertical scrolls, the prints unfold from top to bottom, echoing the endless motion of the screen.

The digital screen and the physical world overlap, creating a space where attention moves between two realities, much like the unconscious gesture of scrolling itself.

Jules Dufresne (they/them) is a transdisciplinary artist originally from the unceded territory of Nitaskinan, Québec, currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Interdisciplinary Art, Media, and Design at OCAD University. Working across analog photography, screenprinting, performance, and poetry, their practice explores self-construction in relation to new media and digital culture through an auto-ethnographic lens. They have presented their work at the RIPA -rencontre interuniversitaire de performance actuelle- (Montréal, QC), at Le Lieu, Centre en Art Actuel (Québec City, QC), and at Xpace Cultural Centre (Toronto, ON).

In case you missed it, last week we hosted a free hands-on screenprinting demo at Open Studio as part of Ontario Culture Days.

Visitors had the chance to create their own screenprint inspired by Claudine Crangle’s current vitrine installation, ‘Building Blocks’. The ingenious scored-cube design for the activity was created by our Studio & Education Manager, Pudy Tong, who also led the demonstration. Claudine joined us as well, sharing additional insight into her installation and process.

We’re taking part in Canadian Art Hop (Canadian Art Hop), presented by the Art Dealers Association of Canada Art Dealers Association of Canada, taking place September 24–27.

So cool 😎 A recent addition to the Open Studio community, Zach Foster has brought this awesome screenprinting carousel to the studio!

The machine allows you to print directly onto flat textiles, with multiple screens mounted around a rotating carousel. As a shared studio resource, it’s now available for Open Studio members to use, opening up new possibilities for printing on textiles. 🧵

We’re thrilled to have this new addition to the studio and excited to see what everyone creates with it! ✨

‘My Memory Echoes in You’ transforms a family archive of photographs, slides, and fading images into an installation exploring memory, place, and intergenerational histories. Using remembered landscapes and fragments of personal history, the work considers how memories are carried, transformed, and echoed across time.
