Proof Open Call for Submissions Upcoming Deadline: September 30, 2026

Proof is Gallery 44’s annual group exhibition of work by emerging* Canadian artists, reflecting a range of current concerns and practices in contemporary photography and lens-based media. Proof is often one of the first exhibitions in a professional context for an emerging artist. Past exhibitions have featured work by Kotama Bouabane, Leila Fatemi, Isabelle Hayeur, Anique Jordan, Lotus Laurie Kang, Germaine Koh, Luther Konadu, Meryl McMaster, Karice Mitchell, Elise Rasmussen, Michaëlle Sergile, and Althea Thauberger. Proof 33 will take place in early summer with an opening date in June 2027.

The submissions received through the Proof open call are juried by members of Gallery 44’s Exhibitions Programming Committee (EPC). The committee is composed of Gallery 44 staff, Board, members and community volunteers. Every submission is considered. Together, the jurors create a shortlist, discuss and then decide on the successful applications.

*Emerging artists are defined as being in the early stages of their professional career, have produced a small body of work and achieved some local recognition and/or have limited public exhibition experience. Generally, they have had between 0 and 5 years of professional arts practice.

The gallery and office may be closed until September but Connie Oreamuno’s exhibition, Embed_v2 will remain open in the Vitrines until September 5!

Embed_v2 is a photography installation blending intimate, close-up portraits of the body with projected textures resembling human and supernatural anatomy within an ambient dream-state environment. The series integrates new media and 3D printing, bending traditional print photography. Each portrait is a portal, breathing ethereality into our material world.

Connie Oreamuno is a q***r, Chilean Toronto-based new media artist. She is drawn to dream states, ethereality, colour, surrealism, and how different worlds and practices can intersect. Influenced by her dance background, she is interested in how movement and digital mediums can merge. Her work has been featured in Festival of Recorded Movement, The Textile Museum of Canada, Geary Art Crawl, IC Contemporary’s Noxte, Lore Magazine and she is currently a board member at Charles Street Video. She has primarily worked with projection design and mapping for installations, theatre, film, concerts and event production.

Gallery 44 is pleased to share This Unlikely Sonic Map of Oil: In Conversation with Sanaz Sohrabi, the second essay from 2025-2026 Writer-in-Residence Heather Canlas-Rigg.

In An Incomplete Calendar, Montreal based artist Sanaz Sohrabi investigates the early evolution and unfolding of the Organization of Oil Exporting Countries (OPEC). The film is anchored by a peculiar musical album entitled Rhymes and Songs for OPEC. Recorded in 1980—OPEC’s 20th anniversary—by the Concert Choir of the Central University of Venezuela, the album consists of traditional folk songs from the various nation states that made up OPEC at the time, a gesture of furthering solidarity amongst members. Sohrabi’s investigations unravel the fragility of transnationalism as OPEC sought to create Pan-Arab solidarity through shared nationalist desires to eliminate foreign control and investment in oil, foregrounding member states’ competing agendas—something that was often exacerbated by differing approaches to allyship with Palestine.The visualization of such control became an important tool, as evidenced through the imagery found on stamps in the 1950s and 60s, when OPEC nations used oil towers, tankers and pipelines as recurring branding motifs. As Sohrabi reveals, Rhymes and Songs for OPEC reflected a vast and fraught community, part of the Third World Project, built on the control of oil, the channelling of its revenues and the relationship between sounds and images.

A week remains to visit Almanac 2026 before it closes on Saturday, August 31! Come peruse what Gallery 44 members have been working on this past year.

Almanac is an annual member-run exhibition in the Main Gallery surveying the work of over 140 artists within the membership. An almanac brings to mind seasons, celestial cycles and terrestrial forecasts—an assembly of disparate pieces of information, once seemingly disconnected, converge to bring new patterns to light—presenting observations of the past with anticipation for the future. Each contributing Gallery 44 member chose an image—they are proud of, interested in, working with, or working through; a visual compilation of observations, thoughts, themes, inspirations and curiosities—to represent the past year.

In Search Of opens in the Members’ Gallery from July 17 - August 1, 2026! OUTREACH Awards: Thursday, July 17, 7:00PM (reception 6:00 - 8:00PM)

In Search Of celebrates the creative accomplishments of participating youth from Nia Centre for the Arts, The Remix Project and Shoot for Peace, in a culminating exhibition from OUTREACH, G44’s award-winning darkroom program for youth throughout the GTA.

Annually, Gallery 44 awards two participants from the OUTREACH program the EQ Bank Award. Recipients are awarded based on their unique approach to photography, commitment to continuing their art practice and interest in experimenting with digital image practices.

One participant from the OUTREACH program will also be awarded the TIW x G44 Award sponsored by Total Image Works and Gallery 44. Award winners are nominated by instructors and selected by a jury and receive a complimentary membership to Gallery 44 and one-on-one mentorship.

Almanac, an annual member-run exhibition presenting a non-juried survey of artwork created by Gallery 44 members in the past year, opens in the Main Gallery from July 17 - August 1, 2026.

Opening Reception: Friday, July 17, 6:00 - 8:00PM

An almanac brings to mind seasons, celestial cycles and terrestrial forecasts—an assembly of disparate pieces of information, once seemingly disconnected, converge to bring new patterns to light—presenting observations of the past with anticipation for the future.

In this survey of images, there is something suspended between them—something that is just out of reach—our eyes looking for patterns, our minds wanting to rest on a theme to bind them together—a satisfying mystery: in obscured faces and hazy silhouettes, in glowing orbs of light, in abstraction and in eerie portals that beckon us in.

But what truly connects these images is the fact that they were chosen. Each contributing Gallery 44 member chose an image—they are proud of, interested in, working with, or working through; a visual compilation of observations, thoughts, themes, inspirations and curiosities—to represent the past year. It is a record of seemingly tangential pieces that coalesce into a greater whole to describe our collective past, to help us understand our present, a premonition of what may come based on what has been.

If this almanac shows us what comes next, we are so excited to see it.

OAC Exhibition Assistance Deadline: July 31, 2026, 1:00PM ET

The Ontario Arts Council (OAC) Exhibition Assistance Program provides grants to assist individual artists with costs related to presenting their work in an exhibition. Gallery 44 specializes in photography and prioritizes recommendations for Ontario-based artists with a confirmed exhibition of photography or photo-based work.

This program is open to Ontario-based professional media artists who have a confirmed, upcoming public exhibition. Exhibitions in Ontario, other Canadian provinces and international locations are all eligible. Students enrolled full-time in undergraduate or graduate-level studies are not eligible. Grant amounts must be a minimum of $500 and no more than $2,000.

*Applicants no longer need to apply before their exhibition start date. Applicants may apply for exhibitions that start on or after January 16, 2026.

Grants are made through third-party recommenders (public art galleries, artist-run centres and arts service organizations) throughout the province. Artists must apply directly to a recommender located in the zone in which they live. Approved applications are forwarded to OAC by the recommender once the decision to award a grant has been made.

Participants will have the opportunity to receive a one-on-one in person portfolio review with Shellie Zhang or Emilie Croning. Each Portfolio Review is 20 minutes. We encourage you to bring prints to look at/discuss.

WhatNext: New Gen Artist Series is a year-round free program from Gallery 44 that supports emerging artists aged 16–35 as they begin to shape their careers. Through seasonal virtual workshops, the series offers practical guidance on topics like freelancing, finding opportunities, writing for your practice, contemporary photography, and building sustainable professional habits.
