That’s a wrap on another successful year of Youth-for-Youth (Y4Y) Innovation Program! 🎉

Last Friday, students that participated in Y4Y this summer presented their collaborative projects to families, peers and professionals. Their ideas tackled real-world challenges and showed off their dedication, creativity and teamwork. Their thought-provoking projects included: solar charging phone cases, robot doctors, caravans for animal rescue and more!

Congratulations to all the students who participated in this program, and thank you for allowing us to be a part of your STEM journey. 💖

Y4Y is a free, two-week summer experience for youth ages 12–14 from the Flemingdon Park and Thorncliffe Park neighbourhoods who want to explore STEM in fun, meaningful ways.

Y4Y is offered at no cost to participants thanks to the generous support of our Lead Sponsor, RBC Foundation and Supporting Partner, Honda Canada Foundation.

The night sky is putting on a show for us! 🌠💫

August 12-13 marks the peak of the Perseid meteor shower 🤩 And thanks to the New Moon phase, darker skies mean we can see more shooting stars, even the fainter ones!

The Perseids are active from July 17-August 24 but are best viewed after midnight 🌃 and before dawn 🌅 during the peak.

With minimal light pollution and clear weather, we could see as many as 50-100 shooting stars per hour during the peak.

We all have our favourite domestic cats, but what about our favourite wild cats? Tag yourself in the comments 😺😼

1. Caracal - Their iconic tufted ears are thought to be one of the ways they communicate with each other.

2. Bay Cat - Among the least-studied cats in the world. The first live photo of them was taken in 2002 (and very few have been taken since then).

3. Clouded Leopard - The first species of big cats to branch off from the others. Like other cats in their lineage, they cannot purr. However, unlike their counterparts, they also can’t roar!

4. Canada Lynx - So highly dependent on snowshoe hares for food, even their reproduction cycles are connected to their population.

5. Puma - Holds the record for most common names of any mammal species (40 in English alone).

6. Black-Footed Cat - Most successful hunter in the cat world. They have a 60% success rate while on the hunt!
