Continuing our Women's History Month alumni highlights, we’re celebrating the extraordinary athletes, builders, and teams whose achievements helped shape Alberta’s sporting legacy.
For more than three decades, Mary Currie was a dominant force in five-pin bowling, setting a standard of excellence that few could match. Representing Calgary and Western Canada for 32 years, she became known for her remarkable consistency, competitive spirit, and scoring ability. Mary made history in 1954 when she became the first woman ever to win the Canadian Ladies Singles Championship, a milestone achievement that established her among Canada’s elite bowlers. That same year, she helped lead her team to the Canadian Ladies Team Championship, adding to a career that included four Western Canada Ladies Championship titles and five selections to the Western Canada Ladies All-Star Team. In 1960, she set the Ladies Team High Single record with a score of 418, a mark that stood for more than twenty years.
Beyond her own success, Mary was passionate about growing the sport, dedicating countless hours to coaching and mentoring young bowlers. Through her achievements and commitment to future generations, she left a lasting impact on bowling in Alberta and across Canada.
Mary Currie was inducted into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame in 1978 as a Bowling Athlete.
