Toronto once hosted a little piece of occupied Norway.

After N**i Germany invaded Norway in 1940, Norwegian leaders in exile needed a safe place to rebuild their air force.

Canada gave them that place on the Toronto Islands.

The Royal Norwegian Air Force training camp opened near the island airport in 1940 and quickly became known as “Little Norway.”

Norwegian pilots, navigators, mechanics, and other air personnel trained there before moving on to Allied operations.

The camp later shifted much of its work to Muskoka, but Toronto kept the memory.

Today, Little Norway Park still marks that wartime bond between Canada and Norway.

It’s one of those stories that makes Toronto feel a little bigger than itself.

A city park, a runway, and a desperate ally all became part of the same fight.

Seeking Canadian Descendants of Little Norway Airmen for Documentary Film:

"Little Norway" is a documentary film currently in production in Norway and Canada. It chronicles the Norwegian Air Force's training camps in Toronto and Muskoka during World War II, as seen through the lens of Norwegian war photographer Campbell Norsgaard.

With access to a unique and partly unexplored film archive, the film tells the story of the nearly 3,000 Norwegian youth who fled their occupied homeland and found their way to Ontario, where a training camp-in-exile turned them into one of the most successful air forces in WWII history.

Several Norwegian airmen fell in love during their time in Canada and returned after the war to begin their lives with their Canadian sweethearts. The filmmakers are seeking descendants of these Little Norway couples who would be interested in telling their story.

The film will bring this incredible story back to life, and highlight the importance of Norwegian-Canadian cooperation during World War II.
