Sunnybrook Farm Museum

Sunnybrook Farm Museum Sunnybrook Farm Museum celebrates the early days of Alberta farming right in the heart of Red Deer! In 1899, James Bower came west in search of land. Mrs.

He bought a half section from the Saskatchewan Land and Homestead Company and soon arrived with two railcars full of furniture and his family’s belongings. Bower and their children joined him a few months later. The Bowers’ Sunnybrook Farm became well known for its purebred cattle and herd of Percheron horses. Along with tending his farm, James Bower logged near the Red Deer River canyon and made

bricks from local clay. The farm was eventually taken over by his son, Norman. In 1988, Norman and Iva Bower embraced the idea of an agricultural museum in Red Deer by gifting part of their property to the community. The ten acres that now make up Sunnybrook Farm Museum include barns and workshops built by the Bowers.

Thank You, Red Deer City Council & Community ❤️

We are incredibly grateful to Red Deer City Council for voting in favour of a $30,000 increase in operating support for our heritage site. While this is lower than our original request, we deeply appreciate Council’s continued commitment to annual, ongoing funding and their recognition of the value of our work in preserving local history for the community.

We also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our volunteers, supporters, patrons, and community partners who spoke up, shared our story, and demonstrated just how much this place matters to Red Deer. Your voices truly made a difference.

This support helps ensure that our heritage site remains a place for learning, connection, and community for generations to come. We are sincerely thankful.

*UPDATE*
While the final budget is not approved yet, we are incredibly grateful to City Council for voting unanimously in favour of a $30,000 grant to support the museum next year.

Sunnybrook Farm Museum Needs Community Support

We recently learned that, after 37 years of operation and long-standing partnership with the City of Red Deer, Sunnybrook Farm Museum will no longer receive City funding due to changes in the Community Culture Development Fund. This fund is no longer designed to support core museum operations.

For nearly four decades, Sunnybrook Farm Museum has cared for a 10-acre historic park, heritage buildings, and a collection of more than 5,000 artifacts—many originally from the City’s own collection. Each year, more than 13,000 visitors, including thousands of students, enjoy this space as a place to learn, reflect, and connect with Red Deer’s history.

Without stable operating support, we may be forced to shorten our season, cancel school programs, reduce summer student jobs, and cut permanent staff.

As City Council enters budget deliberations next week, we are formally requesting that the City consider a direct annual operating grant of $50,000, similar to how other major municipal cultural institutions are supported. This funding would help protect a site that was gifted to the people of Red Deer and ensure it remains open and accessible to the community.

If Sunnybrook Farm Museum has been meaningful to you or your family, we encourage you to share your support with City Council. Your voice matters, and public support truly makes a difference.

Thank you to our community for 37 incredible years of support. 💚
