This week we would like to say a special thank you to Alden and Bren! These longtime friends of WEES had a very special day this weekend out at the Fort and we were honoured to be a part of it. Between the beautiful ceremony, beautiful weather, and a beautiful couple we hope you had as much fun as we did on an incredible day. Congratulations!

What a year its been!

From our first day with the chickens and raising the tipis in the spring, to cannon fire at Fort Days, to harvesting our gardens for fall pickling and canning we have had an absolute blast with you all this season. We wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving and leave you with the reminder that the Fort is now closed to the public for the winter as of Tuesday October 14.

We already have some exciting plans brewing for the new year so don't forget about us. The Fort reopens May 1, 2026 (or 1885 if you're looking for an excuse to party), we will see you then!

The history of Indigenous peoples in Canada is complicated. There is a vibrant, colourful history that celebrates the broad spectrum of Canada’s First People. There is the history of colonialism, horrifically represented by the Residential School tragedy, and by the abuse of treaties made in good faith. Through these two lenses there are stories to learn, cultures to share, amends to make, and community-building to undertake.

On this day we encourage you to reflect on your part of Reconciliation in Canada, the actions you take to ensure Indigenous people have representation, and how you talk about Indigenous people with your friends and family, children, and neighbours. Please see events hosted by our friends at the Urban Indigenous Voices Society and (among others) to show your support. Our buildings will be open on September 30th from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. today as our staff take time to support our community. 🟠

The mighty dill leaves — commonly known as ferns for their feathery appearance — are the true hero's of the humble dill pickle. Our old school picking programs at the Fort use fresh produce and herbs found in our gardens but there are many ways to pickle a cucumber. What is your favourite addition to your brine?

I can’t believe how big the tomato plants are getting! What started as a few little seedlings earlier this season has turned into a full-on jungle and every day they seem to grow another inch. Anyone else’s fall tomatoes going crazy right now?

While our real chickens are enjoying their cosy winter retreat, this brave hen is keeping their feathery spirit alive in our now deserted coop at The Fort. With egg in hand, she ensures that there may never be a dull moment on these quiet September days.🐔🥚

Despite both growing on vines grapes and cucumbers are not closely related at all (the more you know)! However, when sliced thinly and tossed in your favourite dressing they make a lovely refreshing salad during the hot days at the end of our summer! What is your favourite way to eat what you have growing in your garden? 🥗

Red Deer's history began by the river prior to the Fort being established in 1885. Shortly thereafter the Crossing community relocated to where we know our home to be today! This throwback Thursday we take a look at a very early Red Deer (although if you know your local history you may recognise some of the names on the hotels). Can you guess the year this photo of Red Deer was taken!

From baskets to beans we can see the fruits of our labours! Our gardens are still growing strong and the baskets we weaved this summer make harvesting a breeze for our interpreters. What is your favourite fall crop?
