🌲J is for Jordan Spreader CN 51070🌲

Built for Pacific Great Eastern in 1965. It operated in compressed air and it was used on the Tumbler Ridge Line. Over time, the machine was used for multiple purposes, including snow removal, digging ditches and clearing bush.

Throwback Thursday!!

The BCR 586 Switcher Locomotive was built in 1956 by Montreal Locomotive Works for the Pacific Great Eastern Railway. This locomotive is an example of a road switcher, a smaller locomotive that can move in both directions and typically moves cars over short distances. Road switchers were built to travel at higher speeds and full freights along mainlines. These versatile engines were common in the 1950s and 1960s and the BCR 586 ran on the BC rail line in Northern BC.

I is for Island Cache School House🏫

Island Cache was a lively, unincorporated community in the area where the museum is now located. Many of the families that lived in the Island Cache worked in the railway and sawmills. The Cottonwood mill closed in 1954 but Island Cache continued to grow as a vibrant and diverse community. By the mid 1960s, the population surpassed 800 people. The school house was built in 1957 and was also used as a community building and meeting place.

Throwback Thursday!!

Steam donkeys like the one in our museum were an important tool for both the rail and forest industries in BC during the early 1900s. A steam donkey was a traction engine that pulled logs out of the bush. The logs were attached to a steel cable that was pulled by a steam powered winch. Three people were required to operate the steam donkey: the donkey punch, who operated the throttle and break, the wood buck who stoked the firebox, and the whistle punk who communicated with the men loading the logs with the steam whistle.

🔥H is for Holman Lookout!🔥

The fire tower was used near Holman Creek, located north of Ft. St. John, and was decommissioned in 2010. It is one of seven towers used in the Prince George Forest District. There are several styles of fire tower: wooden, steel, ground cabs and even old fishing boats perched atop of a high hill were used!

Throwback Thursday!!

The BCOL 6401 crane and idler were built in 1945 by American Hoist and Derrick. The diesel crane and idler were delivered brand new to BC Rail in Prince George in 1964. The crane is 21.7 meters long (71 feet) including the boom. It was used in BCR Auxiliary and may be the oldest diesel crane in BC. It was used by CN and BC Rail and the crane was retired and donated to the museum in 2007.
