Anthropology in Our Backyards is back, presented by University of Northern British Columbia’s Department of Anthropology.

Join us on Thursday, October 22, at 6:00pm at The Exploration Place for “Underground Encounters: Indigenous Siberian Evenk Geological Knowledge and Relational Environmental Ethics” with Dr. Nadia Mamontova of the University of Birmingham, UK.

Dr. Mamontova will explore Indigenous Evenk ethnomineralogy and relational environmental ethics, in which minerals, humans, and environmental phenomena are understood as deeply entangled and connected through relations with non-human forces and broader ecosystems. This talk further examines how this Indigenous society has negotiated and reconfigured its relationships with state geology, which operates through a fundamentally different onto-epistemology, and the encounters and transformations that emerge between these distinct ways of knowing.

Tomorrow morning, Canadian astronaut Joshua Kutryk launches to the International Space Station. Liftoff is scheduled for 8:10 a.m. PDT.

Life in space changes the human body in ways that surprise most people, from how bones and muscles respond to how the heart and eyes adapt. The Health in Space exhibit explores what astronauts do to stay healthy in orbit and why that research matters for health on Earth.

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we honour residential school survivors, the children who never came home, and the families and communities living with the impacts.

It has been 11 years since the Truth and Reconciliation Commission released its Calls to Action. For museums, the direction is clear: support repatriation, ensure Indigenous voices guide the care of cultural belongings, and provide equitable access to heritage.

At The Exploration Place, we are committed to this work through Memorandums of Understanding, repatriation projects, and free memberships for all Lheidli T’enneh and Maiyoo Keyoh members, whose cultural belongings remain under their ownership and in our protective care.

Reconciliation is a continuing journey, and we all have a part in it.

Attention educators, the Health in Space school program is now available for booking!

This school program pairs a guided tour of the Health in Space exhibition with a hands-on workshop. Students learn how space affects the human body, meet Canadian astronauts and innovators, and test the science themselves by modelling bone loss, measuring how fluids shift in the body and checking which materials block UV rays.

It connects directly to the Grade 6 science curriculum, including gravity, scientific inquiry and Canadian contributions to space technology.
