Can't wait to see our latest exhibit? Get a sneak peak tonight (29 May) during Gallery Hop, the free arts-event night hopping around downtown North Bay between 5 - 9 pm.

Come visit the free opening reception for our new exhibit: An Educator's Passion: Changing Lenses on the North Bay Normal School (1915 - 1942), on Saturday June 13, 6:30 - 8 pm. RSVP with subject-line "Reception" to [email protected] to secure your spot at this exciting evening reception.

In this new exhibit, you can explore the history of teaching through the lens of Science and Agriculture “Master” Harry Ricker, whose century-old photography equipment captured both everyday life and the oldest teacher’s college in Northern Ontario. This educational legacy also includes a collaboration with Gimaa (Chief) Ernest Couchie, Nbisiing’s first known taxidermist. The local birds he worked with came to the museum from university classrooms, where they are still used to train educators.

So about last month…. Welcome to Lake Walmart, a great destination for fishing on Fisher Street or canoeing at the Northgate Mall. North Bay is quickly becoming the Waterway of the North.

Even before roadways and railways, North Bay was still the gateway of the north. The Nipissing and HBC used the river highways to trade across the continent. But today, rather than the rivers becoming highways, the highways are becoming rivers.

Happy May Long Weekend North Bay!

If you're looking for something to do this weekend, look no further than the Heritage Railway & Carousel. Kids aged 1-99 can ride the carousel for $3, or have 6 rides for $10. You can buy tickets at the Heritage Railway station or the museum. Although the museum is closed on Monday May 18th, the carousel is open! So visit our friends to celebrate Queen Victoria; les patriotes nationale; or even what we call, in our charming Canadian vernacular, the 2-4.

Histrical context: British subjects have for centuries celebrated the birthday of their monarch and Canada was no different. But with the 64 year reign of Victoria, her birthday, May 24, became something special.

Victoria was recognised as the Mother of Confederation, a cornerstone of Canadian nationhood, responsible government in 1848, and Confederation in 1867.

Since her death in 1901, Victoria's birthday has been celebrated every year in Canada on the Monday before her birthday.

However, the Queen has not been remembered so fondly by all. Upon her ascension to the throne in 1837, a lack of political freedom and French fears of assimilation led to rebellion against British rule.

These and other rebellions across the British Empire were violently put down, like the Irish Rebellion of 1848, the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the Northwest Rebellion of 1885, the Mahdist War, the Boer War, etc. In the spirit of decolonial anti-imperial resistance, this day is also celebrated, especially among les Quebecois, comme la journee nationale des Patriotes, or National Patriots Day.

Last month, the North Bay Museum's "Coffee and Conversations" series welcomed Kandyd and Brian to celebrate the Nipissing Rock & Mineral Club's 70th anniversary!

In this video, we see just one of the ways that the Rock and Mineral Club brings out real world examples of minerals like copper, quartz, and shale contributing to our everyday lives!

Looking at images of our local geography, we learned how the land in and around North Bay was shaped by geological processes over millennia: volcanoes, Ice Age glaciers, ancient oceans, and once-great mountains.

We would like to thank the Nipissing Rock & Mineral Club and all those who came out last week. It was fun for all ages, and we hope to rock out with you all again soon!

Happy May the Fourth North Bay! Although we don’t have Ewoks, we do have lions! The North Bay Lions Club has proudly displayed their century of history here at the North Bay Museum as part of our rotating exhibition on all our local Service Clubs.

Beginning in 1925, the same year North Bay became incorporated as a city, the local Lions received their charter. They began work creating Lions Club Park, providing reading glasses for children, and offering x-rays to scan for tuberculosis. They championed the work of charity the the principle of paying it forward. So much so that by 1955 Widdifield and West Ferris established their own branches of Lions. In 1987, the Lions expanded their membership to women. And since then, the North Bay Lions have continued to live by the motto coined by Melvin Jones in 1917, "We Serve."

History is not so long ago. And at the North Bay Museum, it’s never far far away. Nevertheless, it’s always out of this world!

Join us on Thursday, 30th April 2026, from 2:00 - 3:30pm to celebrate 70 years of the Nipissing Rock & Mineral Club with a rock-ing event. Listen to the North Bay edition of “Every Rock Tells a Story.”
