This Day for Truth and Reconciliation, on Wednesday 30th September, the North Bay Museum opens our doors with free admission. We are honoured to share Paul Seesequasis's exhibit, the People of the Watershed: Photographs by John Macfie photography; centring the living traditions of Indigenous communities in Northern Ontario.

The exhibit is open until 18th October. It was organised and circulated by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Kleinburg, Ontario, and curated by Indigenous cultural advocate Paul Seesequasis. The Museum brought this exhibit to the North with funding from the Government of Canada, through the Department of Patrimoine Canadian Heritage (PCH).

The Museum’s Haunted Hikes return Fridays in October starting at 6pm (see the link below for all available tours).

This 60-minute downtown walking tour combines true crime tales with eerie ghost stories. For only $7 a person see North Bay in a whole new shadow. We start in our very own museum, the old Canadian Pacific Railway Station, where we spook you with stories that include sightings in our building! Then we venture into downtown towards the old Arcadian Grill, travel all the way down Main Street to the North Bay Court House, then make our way back to the museum. We’ll include haunting historic stories all along the way!

A common visitor to North Bay in the summer months, red-eyed vireos can be hard to spot perched at the tops of trees. They can be identified by their olive green back, white underparts, grey crown, and a white line above their red eyes. Try to find them singing in the trees at Sweetman’s Garden, Laurier Woods, or in the trails along Lake Nipissing.

Taxidermy of a red-eyed vireo prepared by Gimaa (chief) Ernest Couchie of Nipissing First Nation–as well as several other bird species–can be seen at the North Bay Museum, part of the An Educator’s Passion exhibit on display until the end of November.

You asked and we delivered North Bay! The Museum gift shop is now carrying five new vendors, all from North Bay and Northeastern Ontario, focusing on arts, crafts, and local classics. These include collage kits and original collage artworks, photograph prints, alpaca wool products, and Indigenous art represented on various merchandise, including towels, bookmarks, puzzles, and more, as well as all Temagami Dry drinks. More local products, from these and other vendors, will be coming soon!

The Museum would like to thank everyone who joined us last month for the opening reception of People of the Watershed: Photographs by John Macfie, a multilingual photo exhibit offering an intimate portrait of life in Indigenous communities of the Hudson’s Bay watershed. We would also like to thank the exhibit curator, nîpisîhkopâwiyiniw (Willow Cree) cultural advocate and curator, Paul Seesequasis, who spoke about his work, bringing together the photography of John Macfie and the communities he documented.

The People of the Watershed exhibit was organised and circulated by the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Kleinburg, Ontario. This project has been made possible by the Government of Canada, through the Department of Patrimoine Canadian Heritage (PCH).
