Carmichael-Stewart House Museum We are closed for the season and will reopen next summer. Admission is always free at the Carmichael Stewart House and we would love for you to visit.

Situated on the tree-lined Temperance Street in the heart of New Glasgow, sits one of Pictou County's most historic residences. The late Victorian home with original hardwood floors and beautiful stained glass windows houses an extensive photo collection, Trenton Glassware, an amazing

clothing collection and many unique Pictou County treasures. Throughout each summer season the museum houses different exhibits, and holds a variety of events that are all open to the public.

As our summer students finish up for the season, our hours have changed at the museum. We will now be closed on Sunday and Monday, and close at 4pm on Tuesdays. Please note that August 29th will be our last open day of the season. After that, private tours can be booked.

This is known as a “Victorian Sewing Bird”. It could be clamped to the side of a table, and was used to aid with sewing from the mid 1800’s to the mid 1900’s. The bird had 2 functions: It could hold pins in the cushions attached to the metal body, and it acted as a “third hand”, as the beak of the bird would open when pressure was applied to the tail, to help hold fabric in place between the bird's beak. This bird in particular, is missing a cushion on top of its back. Many modern reproductions of these were made from 1950-1980.

This is an early model of the vaporizer, or humidifier. The Vapo-Cresolene went back as early as 1879. “Cresol” is a liquid form of coal tar, and is poured into the top globe of the vaporizer, to be heated by an open flame. It was said that inhaling the vapours would help with things like pneumonia, whooping cough, colds, asthma, etc. It was however concluded by the American Medical Association in 1908 that the product was a scam, and using the vaporizer in poorly ventilated rooms resulted in near poisonings. Despite all of this, the product sold until the 1950’s.
Fun fact! The Vapo-Cresolene was one of around 100 items that was part of a traveling exhibit called the “American Chamber of Horrors”, in 1933. Created by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it displayed all of the products deemed dangerous and hazardous to society, that the FDA were unable to remove from the market.
