Introducing Studio Visits #01

The first edition from Croyds’ studio-visit archives.

Over the past decade, we’ve had the privilege of visiting artists in their studios and seeing how their ideas take shape.

These encounters have deepened our understanding of the work not only through the finished pieces, but through the questions, connections, and choices that lead to them.

This edition brings together three studio encounters.

Each set includes three 4 × 6 inch photographs and a short Croyds curator’s note written specifically for this release.

The photographs are not explanations of the artists’ work, but records of the spaces and encounters surrounding it. They offer another way to look.

Our next art critique is this Sunday, August 23, from 5–9 PM.

Presented by Croyds in collaboration with Meraki Wave, this free, limited-capacity critique brings together artists, curators, collectors, and curious minds for an evening of thoughtful feedback, conversation, and connection.
Selected artists will present one artwork for group discussion in a relaxed studio setting, followed by informal conversation and social time.

We’re delighted to have visited Bengisu studio and to share a closer look at her practice. Istanbul-born and Montreal-based, Yazıcı is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily with ceramics and jewelry.

Her work investigates the limits of nonverbal language through form, extremity, and facial expression, asking what the body can communicate when words fail. In her practice, visual language becomes a bridge between inner and spiritual experience and the material world we inhabit.

Featured in this carousel is You Will Give Birth to Yourself (2026), a stoneware work measuring 8.5 × 9 cm, currently available through Croyds.

We're expanding our artist selection and looking for new voices to join Croyds. This online open call is for small-scale figurative and image-based works in the 4x6 flat surface format. Selected artists may be added to our roster and considered for future online shows and sales.

WHO SHOULD APPLY:

Emerging and established artists working in small-scale contemporary art, especially figurative, expressive, or image-driven practices. International submissions welcome.

ARTWORK SPECS:

Size: 4 x 6 inches (exactly) Flat surface works only (no sculpture, no 3D objects)

Mediums: painting, drawing, collage, print, mixed media, and other 2D practices Stretcher-free, suitable for framing

DEADLINE:

This is an ongoing open call. Submissions are reviewed continuously.

Tune in next Tuesday as we share photos from our studio visit with Bengisu , a Montreal-based, Istanbul-born multidisciplinary artist working primarily in ceramics and jewelry.

✣ Alicja Skolicka 𓃢 ✣ chose the bat as a recurring beast in her work for its rich symbolism and the completely different way it experiences life. Based in Cracow, she works across oil painting and ceramic sculpture, building a personal mythology shaped by folklore, Gothic romance, and the space between the mystical and the mundane. Her work Two Dancing Souls is available now via the Croyds Gallery website.

Last month we launched Gesture & Voices: An Art Critique. We wanted to curate a space that felt open to all, but still private enough for artists to come and share their work honestly. We know that exposing vulnerability is never easy, and we’re grateful to everyone who stepped into that space with us.

While Croyds is often rooted in elevating small-scale works, we also wanted this critique to make room for work outside the scope of figurative painting and scale, creating space for a wider range of practices, perspectives, and conversations.

Thank you to all the artists who participated, and to Meraki Wave for hosting the project and helping hold the space. Thank you Gabriel for capturing this project.

Amber Skye Alcock , based in Cape Town, brings a surreal and symbol-driven practice to Beastly. Her work explores the ethics of care through animals as psychological and allegorical figures, making her a strong fit for the exhibition’s focus on beasts, oddities, and the unknown. Her piece Omen is available now via the Croyds Gallery website.
