Wilson's Point Historic Site Come visit the best keep secret on the Miramichi Historic Scottish graveyard and 1791 church replica He was Rev. John Urquhart a native of Cromarty, Scotland.

Abbreviated History of the Point:

William Davidson was the first permanent English speaking settler on the Miramichi River. He obtained a large land grant from the Province of NS(NB was not a separate province at the time) in 1765. In the 25 years between 1765 and 1790, the Miramichi Valley changed from a forest wilderness to an organized community with scattered settlements along both sides of the river, much of it due to the persistence and ability of William Davidson, a Scotsman. He was a pioneer in the fish, lumber, and shipbuilding industries no only in Miramichi and was successful in establishing overseas markets for Miramichi products. Davidson ( nee John Godsman) from Banffshire, Scotland was accompanied to this area by his business partner, John Cort from Aberdeenshire. They were responsible for establishing many settlers from Scotland in the Miramichi. Following their expulsion from NS, the Acadians took refuge in this area during the 1756-1759 period. A cairn commemorating their history was erected nearby in August 2006. Many of the earliest settlers along the Miramichi are buried at Wilsons Point but there were only 17 identifiable tombstones here when Lord Beaverbrook began a restoration on the site in 1947. At that time the original stones were clean but over the years the writing on them has become almost unreadable, so new markers were purchased by the Scottish Heritage Association. Each marker contains the original inscription where possible. Many of the original graves were enclosed by fences as indicated on the cemetery entrance sign. Lord Beaverbrook was referring to these when he called the park "The Enclosure" in the late 1940s. The first Protestant church in Miramichi area was built at Wilsons Point. James Anderson was the designer and builder of Saint James Church in 1791. He was a Scotsman, brought to the Miramichi by William Davidson. This is the actual site of that church, the cornerstones having been located by archaeologists in 2003. It was similar in size and design to the new interpretive center but we have been unable to locate a picture of the original building. There were a number of traveling clergymen to the Miramichi area in the late 1700s but it was not until 1802 that a Presbyterian minister took up residence in Miramichi. He preached at both Wilsons Point and Moorfields from 1802 until 1814, and is buried in Moorfields cemetery in Millbank. The Point had been know by various names but after 1820 it was know as Wilsons Point. It was named for a Scotsman from Stromness, Orkney, Scotland, John Wilson. He and his wife, Euphemia Clouston arrive in the Miramichi about 1817 and settled at the Point. John Wilson was known as the ferryman from the Point. He operated his ferry from Wilsons Point to both sides of the river and to Beaubear's Island. In 1856 the North West Bridge was opened. The services of the ferryman were less frequently required, so John Wilson retired from his ferryman business to become a farmer. The Point is still know as Wilsons Point.

It’s Wednesday already, this week is flying by. Just a reminder that Workshop Wednesday is canceled for the rest of the season.

We will be reevaluating the workshops for next season and would appreciate any feedback to help make what we offer more appealing to everyone.

Please keep in mind offering evening classes is very difficult due to lighting and staffing.

We still have our perishables on sale for buy one get one free. This includes all of our candy, coffee and tea. Come stock up before the shelves empty.

We’ll be tucked up inside the little church today waiting to see you. There’s only 10 days left til we close up for the season and get ready for our Christmas Tea.

We are back for the final two weeks of the season which tend to be the spookiest of all.

We have two great haunted happenings taking place this year.

First is Haunted Tales in the Cemetery with Storyteller Calum Lykan on Friday Oct 23rd. Calum will lead you into our centuries old graveyard to where the original church once stood for spine tingly tales. Beware of the shadows, with all of our residents buried so close you never know who might be sittings amongst you.

We have two tour times, 630 and 8 pm. Dress warm, bring a lawn chair if you’d like. Tickets can be purchased upon arrival in the little church. Be sure to arrive at no later than ten minutes before the scheduled time. Hot chocolate will be available to keep you warm. $15/person. Please use parental discretion, this is not for the littles.

Then on Sat Oct 24th at 7pm join Calum for Scottish Bedtime Stories not for the Faint of Heart. Our masterful storyteller is back with a whole new set of gruesome and grizzly tales taken from his beloved Scotland. He’s so descriptive you’ll fell the fog of Edinburgh on your skin. We’ll have light refreshments to enjoy. Tickets are by paid reservation only. $15/person. Etransfers can be sent to [email protected]

This week the sales continue in the gift shop.

Unfortunately we’ve had to cancel our last two workshops of the season. We would love some feed back of what you’d like to see for workshops for next year. Please inbox us with your ideas.

Piper David and Storyteller Calum Lykan will be under the pines this Sunday for the last Super Scottish Sunday of the season. Tales start at 1pm and tunes begin at 2pm.

What a wild adventure today was.

Our 4th Great Miramichi Haggis Hunt and Fall Fair was definitely the best yet!

We could not have done it without some phenomenal vendors who traveled near and far and had deal with the wind. You folks are amazing and we can’t wait to have you back next year.

Thank you to Piper David and his lovely wife Kim, all of the Women of the Point, our Scottish Storyteller Calum Lykan and Neil Wallace aka William Wallace for being the answers to some of our scavenger hunt questions, posing for photos and being part of the day.

Big thanks to Gill for cooking up a storm this week and making enough soup to feed the army and to Naomi for helping to serve it.

To Leslie who sat in the cold selling tickets, and Steph, Darren and Isaiah for helping set up, tear down and direct traffic. You folks never fail to step up and lend a hand and we love you for it.

To the Walsh Family/ Healing Farm we have loved having you as part of of Wilson’s Point Family and will miss you, but are so glad you’re getting to relax and enjoy life a little bit more.

As always the Miramichi Accessible transit crew carried everyone safely to and from the parking areas and made our event more accessible for all.

Big thanks to Northern Green for clearing our market are of pine needles and cones at the last minute and to Williston’s Toilets for bringing in some extra units this week for us. Both these companies are amazing to work with.

Thank you to Horizon Health for choosing our event as part of the Fall Family Harvest Day, we so enjoyed having you.

To our crew who returned on their long weekend to help out, Ireland, Thomas, Caileigh, Marty and Ashley and our three little extras who were roped in to assist, Eli, Angela and Caden. You out did yourselves today. Thanks for being so wonderful and making the day stress free.

To the Queen bee and our second in command in training Marlee and Kalen, thanks for listening to all the rants and worries and for knocking this one out of the park. There is no way this could have gotten done without you.

Thanks to all of our hunters and visitors for coming out, supporting our vendors, purchasing raffle tickets and being patient while waiting on water to boil. We’re pretty sure or haggis survived for another year, and we hope you’ll all be back again next Fall.

We are going to take tomorrow (Sun) and Monday off to rest up and will return on Tuesday for our last two weeks of the season,

It’s finally happening! The Great Miramichi Haggis Hunt and Fall Fair happens TODAY from 11-2pm! Yay!!

Here’s what you need to know:

1)The gates will not open to the public until 11am. It will be vendors and staff until then so we can have everything ready for the day.

2)Registration for the hunt will start at 11am and continue until 130pm. Make sure to bring a camera, phone or tablet to capture photos.

3)Everything is outdoors. So dress warm. You can warm up in the church with hot apple c***r and hot chocolate and check out the sales in the gift shop.

4)Parking is available along the left side of the road towards the Enclosure and there is plenty of space out on the flat at the Enclosure. You can also park at the Bible camp(please try your best to stay off the lawn) and along the right side of the road towards Wilson’s Point. Parking near the church is accessible only to vendors and staff.

5)Miramichi Accessible transit will be frequenting the entire road and parking areas for pick ups and drop offs, if you miss them they’ll return shortly.

6)Please be kind and do not block other vehicles in. Our staff will be at the stop sign at the top of the road after you cross the tracks to assist you and show you where to go.

7)Bring cash for the market and raffle. Debit and credit is available for purchases in the church.

8)Raffle tickets will be sold until 2pm. All hunters must have their name scavenger list back to the church before 2pm. Draws will take place as soon as possible after that.

9)You do not have to be present to win but if at all possible please be available to pick up your prize by 3pm or make arrangements to pick it up when we return on Tuesday Oct 13th. The turkey basket may be able to be delivered if necessary.

10)The Healing Farm will be behind the church for cuddles and treats. Bring change for food to feed them.

11) Porta potties are available on either end of the church.

12) Please be sure to dispose of any trash in the bins located and leave recyclables in the church.

13) Our crew will be happy to assist you in anyway they can. Please be patient and kind. We will not be checking our socials so if you need immediate help call 506-627-0162.

We’re down to one sleep left before the biggest event of the season.

We’re just about ready for the Great Miramichi Haggis Hunt and Fall Fair.

Mother Nature has painted everything pretty, prize bags are packed, treat bags are ready, baskets are decked with ribbon, the latest version of the scavenger hunt is finished, road signage is all ballooned, market layout map is drawn, the haggis are ready to play hide and seek, Gill is cooking up a storm and our vendors and volunteers are excited to see everyone. 🤗

All that’s left is the next instalment of Howzie’s story by the boss lady who sure knows how to procrastinate to the last second 😬

Joining us for the hunt are the Women of the Point, Piper David, Storyteller Calum Lykan and Braveheart. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Our Artist in Residence Kelly Hay - Hambrook and the Miramichi Art Core will be painting plein air to capture the colors and activities in real time. 🎨👩🏻‍🎨🖼️

All of our summer crew are back to help out with a few of our favorite and loyal volunteers. 💕

We are thankful to have the Healing Farm and Miramichi Accessible Transit helping out with cuddles and shuttles. ☺️

We’d also like to welcome Horizon Health families who will be celebrating the Harvest Day with us. 🍁🍂🍁
