A truly unique, and important, artifact was recently donated to the Miramichi History Museum. It is a WWI era, portable recruitment office scale. Owned by a local family since shortly after the war, it had been repainted in the 1980s. This actual scale would have been used to weigh local recruits, all over Miramichi, during WWI. It could be packed up and brought to any local village or community. At the time, a recruit had to be over 125 pounds and at least five feet four inches!
Great donation. Thanks!

A few of our more recent donations to the Miramichi History Museum. We are always thankful for each of these gifts and amazed at the eclectic nature of our donations. From coins and hockey pucks to tall ship pulleys and vintage Miramichi business receipts. We are honoured to preserve these unique pieces of Miramichi history for future generations. Thanks!

With Remembrance Day once again upon us, the Miramichi History Museum would like to share a recent donation of important Miramichi WW2 items.
Robert Edward Gammon (Chatham, NB) made the supreme sacrifice, for God and country, in Italy on May 25, 1944. He was twenty years old.
Below are pictured Pte. Gammon’s war medals, still in their presentation boxes, like the day they were issued. Also donated was his silver memorial bar.
But the most touching item is the letter written by the Carlton and York Regimental chaplain, Capt. E.W. McQuarrie. He writes a letter, to the Gammon family, of tremendous beauty and detail. It’s describes where and when Robert fell and how he was a tremendous soldier. The chaplain paints details of Robert’s burial with such care, you cannot help imagining being present.
A truly beautiful, and special donation!
