Episode 3: Newcomers have helped shape Canadian figure skating for decades—as coaches, skaters, choreographers and equipment makers. We speak with longtime coach and Skate Canada / Patinage Canada archivist Emery Leger, and Elizabeth Knebli, whose parents made skates for some of the sport’s biggest stars.

Get ready to taste, move, and experience culture in motion at Joseph Brant Museum during our dine & dance series! This event will introduce you to various cultures through the world of food, music, and dance. Guests will have the opportunity to try hors d’oeuvres and beverages from a specific region of the world (7pm – 8pm) and view the special exhibit “eat make share: a taste of immigration.” A dance demonstration and short, interactive dance lesson will then follow on the museum’s Rooftop Terrace (8pm – 9pm). Dance demonstrations and interactives will be provided in partnership with a local, cultural organization.

Tickets are $35/person, or $40/person with an alcoholic drink ticket. All tickets include museum admission, hors d’oeuvres, light refreshments, a dance demonstration, and interactive dance lesson. This is an 16+ event. The dance portion of the event will be moved indoors in the case of inclement weather.

"There’s a vibrant group of Japanese Canadian immigrant women who meet to share the Way of Tea in Whitehorse … I realize that although I am not fluent in Japanese, I have absorbed some of the important cultural lessons of my parents. I am drawn to the tea ceremony because it’s my way back to my mother, and my roots."

Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, Halifax, Nova Scotia

A museum isn’t just a building. It’s a promise born of a dream to reflect, learn, and remember.

That promise started with two people. J.P. LeBlanc marched through Pier 21 in 1942 bound for the European front. He returned in 1946 with his British war bride and later became Director of Immigration for the Atlantic Provinces. When Pier 21 closed in 1971, he dreamed of honouring the nearly one million who arrived here.

In the 1980s, J.P. asked community leader Ruth Goldbloom to lead the Pier 21 Society. Their work led to national historic designation in 1997, a museum opening on Canada Day 1999, and becoming Canada’s sixth national museum in 2011.

It’s a must-add for cultural heritage travelers, anyone planning an East Coast Canada road trip, or building a meaningful Halifax itinerary. Step inside and discover our Museum.
