Most of my work that are of northern Indigenous life are from memories, I include my family memories but also my memories of living in the north. I just recently had a major retrospective at SAW Gallery in Ottawa which included works dating back 40 years. The variety of my work over that time varied immensely – but I have always kept this style of work as my mainline of presenting those living memories. Most of the images I do come from a distinct period of time ranging from the late 60s to late 80s – I am now in my seventies and to think that this period remains with me only proves that it was the best of times and the worst of times all interwoven in my lifetime. I see myself as a witness and interpreter of those times, honesty in the work is important to me as a witness and I bring it forward to the viewer to interpret as they wish.

The Bearclaw Gallery respectfully acknowledges the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, Orange Shirt Day on September 30th. On this day we remember the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Survivors of Canada’s residential school system. We recognize the children who never returned, and the devastating and enduring impact on their families and communities.

The Bearclaw Gallery is pleased to welcome our newest artist Eugene Alexis!

Eugene Alexis is a Stoney Nakoda from Alexis #133 Indian Reserve, located in Treaty No. 6 Territory. He lives on the shores of Wakamne (God' s Lake), also known as Lac Ste Anne. Eugene is a fluent speaker, translator, transcriber and curriculum developer of the Alexis Stoney Nakoda Language. He has been teaching Stoney Nakoda over 25 years and gives thanks to the Creator for his Identity, language and culture.

Holy Light
As our time on earth quickens with age, our dreams become more accessible, our past vanishes and a vision of our collective human fate becomes clear. Our spirit needs the light of the soul to illuminate a path to compassion, love, and spiritual practice, and to honor nature’s laws.

Ancestors warned us of this future, now our children’s, children’s, children’s and 7 generations beyond must solve our problems of waste, greed, self, hate and war manifested so much in this time of technology and profit.

This work seeks a Holy Light, an aurora of truth, visions of porpoises and eagles, riding a wave on the crystal river of time, listening to the child of the moon, a hummingbird water woman, a fallen warrior, ceremony and a thunder clap and flash of light to illuminate our souls to envision a shared future.
