This week marks International Heritage Breeds Week! Heritage breeds are traditional livestock breeds, raised before industrial agriculture became mainstream. These breeds were carefully selected and bred over time to develop traits that made them well adapted to their environments, self-sufficient, and resistant to disease. They are known for such things as foraging ability, longevity, and strong maternal instincts. Today, many of these breeds are at risk, as they have fallen out of favour, replaced by modern breeds that are quicker growing and more efficient to raise. But heritage breeds are vital to the future of agriculture, as they store a wealth of genetic information that will benefit future food systems and help us to whether the challenges of rapidly changing environments.

Did you know that many of the animals at the Farm are heritage, or part heritage breeds? Berkshire pigs, Dorset sheep, Speckled Sussex chickens, and Buff Orpington ducks. On you next visit, try to see if you can spot them!

Speaking of Dorset sheep, our partner farm the Zillig Farm, has one of the oldest continuous lines of Dorset sheep in Canada. For two generations the Zillig's have maintained a line purebred Dorsets, and their sheep are sought out across North America. Always mindful of maintaining strong bloodlines, the last Dorset ram introduced to their flock hailed from Australia!

If you remember Farm Days in the 1980's, you may remember Charity the sheep. Charity was a purebred Dorset with beautiful horns. Horns are now uncommon, as they can present safety challenges to flock and farmer, and have been bred out of production flocks.

May 18th was International Museum Day. While we are a couple days late, we wanted to take the opportunity to highlight our commitment to being a Pay What You Can Museum.

The Farm is dedicated to preserving and interpreting Cole Harbour's agricultural past and strive towards removing barriers to education through a 'Pay What You Can' admission fee.
