We removed almost 5000 pounds of debris from Seal Island this past weekend! (4852 pounds to be more precise)

It was a lot of HARD WORK and lucky for us we had support from many hardworking fishers, Nova Scotia Nature Trust and the island folks, too! We didn't count every single piece of debris, mostly because we wanted to prioritize cleaning up as much as we could and getting it off the island. There is A LOT more work to be done!

But here are a few counts of the most common items:

🐟 1578 Bait Bags
🔵 642 Plastic Bottles
🦞 285 Lobster Elastic Bands
🌊 166 Buoys and Balloon Buoys

Next year we are hoping to go back for a week. Will the stars align?

The Scotian Shores Clean Up project is set up at the Coastal Can on the Waterfront. I plan to be here until 5pm ❤️ These markets help us fund our larger retrievals and ongoing costs.

The month of August is over and so is our island adventures. Now it's time to try and raise some money to pay for more adventures!

We are headed back for second year in the Build Nova Scotia Coastal Can located on the Halifax waterfront near the Salt Yard. We set up our shop for a whole week and
show off all the amazing things we make from marine debris. Our products are all locally made and support local cleanup initiatives!

We have always focused on local, local, local and still continue to do so! BUT we see a lot of cruise ship traffic at this pop up shop, which is neat, because then the whole world gets to hear about the good things we are doing!

The data is in! The MOST COMMON item found on the shorelines of Digby Neck & Islands is plastic bottles!

We found over 2600 of them during the Second Annual Ann's Legacy Shoreline Clean Up. We made sure to divert every bottle we could from the landfill through various local recycling initiatives.

Did or does anyone else have a family member that LOVES picking up refundables? My Nanny used to say, "5 Cents!" and would pull over to pick them up. Is that where I get it from? 🤔 ❤️

Here are a few moments from our Seal Island Trip I wanted to share this with you before I show you the other side of things.

This island sits thirty kilometers offshore, and before we arrived, I really thought there wouldn't be that much debris. You know, it's pretty easy to look past the debris when you're faced with such beauty: Sandy beaches, one of the most beautiful lighthouses I have ever explored, sheep and birds everywhere, rolling dunes, and even one of the nicest outhouses I've ever used in my life! I can understand why folks would want to spend their days out here - because it's a piece of heaven.

Our small team of seven folks headed to the island for only one weekend. We enjoyed our time, but we also worked really hard to try to be good stewards of the place we were taking solace in. The islanders who came to meet us were very supportive and a few even want to know when we will be back. ❤️

LAND HOOOOO! We are back from Seal Island! Time to unload our TWO boats of debris! SO MUCH marine debris was removed but we still need to crunch some numbers and double check the data!

It is Friday so time for another data update!

We hit the 1.9 million pound mark for our lifetime total! Any guesses on when we will hit 2 million?

The total number of lobster bands removed keeps going up. Send your data to us by posting in our group, using the report tool or the app!

The totals are in for the Second Annual Ann's Legacy Shoreline Clean Up Women's Retreat!

We cleaned the shores of Digby Neck, Long Island and Brier Island. Drumroll 🥁 please!

🌊 Over 8600 pounds of marine debris was removed from the shores!

🌊 Over 10,000 different items were counted and cataloged. Can you guess what our MOST COMMON item was?

🌊 We were able to divert OVER 50% of what we picked up through local recycling initiatives, artisans and reuse!!! WOW!

A huge thank you goes out to everyone who helped us ladies, especially the harvesters, our male volunteers and folks from the Islands. Many hands make light work. And what we did was amazing 👏 More data will be coming your way soon!
