The Design Museum Brussels, established after the acquisition of a private collection by the Atomium, is a place dedicated to design and its history. Since 2015, the museum's collection, The Plastic Design Collection, circumscribes the landscape of plastics in design from the 1950s to the present day. Alongside this collection, in September 2020 the museum opened Belgisch Design Belge, a new permanent exhibition space dedicated to Belgian design and its history. Enriched by a programme of temporary exhibitions, the Design Museum Brussels also explores other fields of design creation and its impact on society and our daily lives. Through exhibitions, guided tours, workshops, conferences and events, the museum aims to ensure that design is intelligible to one and all.

Designing Childhood, co-organised with the Centre Pompidou, highlights children’s furniture. As a source for innovation and experimentation, it reflects the social, cultural, economic, technological and educational transformations of its time. The exhibition also reveals the dialogue between Belgian and international designs, as well as the changing place of children in society.

This weekend, it’s time for the Matrimony days!

There’s plenty on the programme at the museum. Catherine Thomas, curator of the Charleroi Glass Museum, will give an engaging talk on the role of women in the history and creation of glass art. We’ll also take you on a guided tour of our permanent exhibition belgisch design belge and temporary exhibition Val Saint-Lambert & Design through the lens of women’s heritage.

Le programme du musée est bien rempli. Catherine Thomas, conservatrice du Musée du Verre de Charleroi, animera une conférence sur le rôle des femmes dans l’histoire et la création verrières. Nous vous proposerons également une visite guidée de notre exposition permanente belgisch design belge et de notre exposition temporaire « Val Saint-Lambert & Design à travers le prisme des matrimoines.

Er staat heel wat op het programma in het museum. Catherine Thomas, conservator van het Glasmuseum van Charleroi, zal een boeiende lezing geven over de rol van vrouwen in de geschiedenis en de creatie van de glaskunst. Daarnaast nemen we je mee op een rondleiding door onze permanente tentoonstelling belgisch design belge en de tijdelijke tentoonstelling Val Saint-Lambert & Design vanuit het perspectief van vrouwelijk erfgoed.

On October 1st, during Brussels Design Week, Kartell Brussels is hosting a big Kartell Day!

The festivities begin at the Design Museum Brussels with a guided tour of the Plastic Design Collection, followed by an exclusive conference by Elisa Storace, Director and Curator of the Museo Kartell in Milan, and a gathering at the Kartell flagship store in Ixelles with an evening cocktail reception!

On the occasion of World Alzheimer’s Day, we would like to shine a spotlight on a new project in the museum.

Together with Alzheimer Belgique asbl, Design Museum Brussels is taking part in the ‘Alzheimer Activité Art & Culture’ project, which aims to enable people living with Alzheimer’s disease and related conditions, as well as their loved ones, to enjoy the museum experience to the full. The initiative reflects the museum’s mission, as defined by ICOM (2024), to be a museum at the service of society, attentive to the needs and diversity of its audiences.

By joining the network of museums committed to ‘Alzheimer Activité Art & Culture’, Design Museum Brussels is contributing to a collective effort towards a more inclusive and accessible culture. By developing approaches tailored to the needs of different audiences, the museum is helping to change perceptions of Alzheimer’s disease and placing well-being at the heart of its cultural mission.

À l'occasion de la Journée mondiale Alzheimer, nous souhaitons mettre en avant un nouveau projet mis en place au musée.

Inclusive Play, Objects and Spaces: Designing for Children

On September 17th platform voor architectuur & feminisme and Design Museum Brussels join forces to organize the conversation about designing inclusive environments for and with children.

On the occasion of the exhibition ‘Designing Childhood. A History of Design for Children’ at the Design Museum Brussels, we invite you to a conversation on contemporary design practices that place children at the centre. Together with three inspiring speakers, we will explore how inclusivity, play, and pedagogy take shape in practice.

Lieke Lenaerts (Lieke Li. Lenaerts) will present the collaboration between Product Design students at LUCA School of Arts and children with hand or arm disabilities.
已 ጦ ጦ Ƌ will share her experiences with projects centred on play culture, including the Nüdel Kart, developed for children living in refugee camps.
Wim De Graeve will discuss his work at Art Basics for Children, where he designs and builds creative learning environments.

We invite you to join the conversation and share experiences and ideas on design practices for and with children.
