Join us tomorrow for an afternoon of artist talks as part of The Event of a Thread.

Bringing together 19 emerging artists, the exhibition explores textiles as a medium and an expanded field of artistic inquiry, drawing connections across material, cultural and technological practices.

Come along to hear from the artists about their work, processes and ideas.

The Event of a Thread is on display until 24 October 2026.

The Grace Cossington Smith Gallery presents Richard Dunn: Thinking Pictures, an exhibition of works by Australian artist and educator Richard Dunn (1944–2024). Throughout his career, Richard approached painting as a form of enquiry, using it to explore perception, meaning and human experience. Featuring works from the Names and After Albert Namatjira series, the exhibition reflects Richard's enduring engagement with language, history, identity and the complexities of contemporary life.

Open now | The Event of a Thread

The Event of a Thread brings together 19 emerging artists who engage with textiles as a medium and an expanded field of artistic inquiry.

Pleat Series, Ripple Series, Warp Series
In her printmaking practice, Lois uses hand-pleated silk to create modular printing plates. With careful application of ink and controlled pressure, the fine weave of silk and moments of collapse in the pleated surface produce tones and textures reminiscent of aquatint. Lois transfers a singular impression of each plate to kozo paper in deep blue ink. To give these ethereal images a contradictory sense of weight, each sheet is wrapped onto board using paper conservation techniques. The abstract forms depicted are familiar but unfixed, sitting somewhere between surface, object and simulation.
