Every person experiences Mungejup differently.

Some arrive curious about the history of The Block. Others come to better understand the people, stories and history of Redfern’s Aboriginal urban community through the artworks and stories shared throughout the gallery.

As they explore, questions are asked, conversations begin and new perspectives are discovered.

Whatever brings you here, we hope you leave with a deeper understanding of the people, resilience and community that continue to shape this place today.

It's carried through people, shared through conversations and remembered by the communities who continue to live it.

At Mungejup, the stories of The Block continue to be told through the voices, memories and experiences that have shaped this place for generations.

Every visitor who takes the time to listen helps ensure these stories continue to be shared into the future.

This year, NAIDOC Week has given us the chance to remember that every right, every opportunity and every step forward has been built on the strength of those who came before us.

We honour the stories that have been shared, the voices that have led the way, and the generations who have worked tirelessly to create change.

We celebrate the strength of our communities, the richness of our cultures, and the enduring connection that continues to bring people together.

Strength is carried in many ways and for generations, boxing has been more than sport — it has been discipline, connection, resilience, and a source of pride.

For Aboriginal men, Indigenous men, and men across all communities, these spaces have also represented strength, identity, and belonging.

This Men’s Health Week, we recognise the importance of checking in — on yourself and the men in your life. Wellbeing is not just physical. It’s social, emotional, and cultural. And it’s strengthened through connection, conversation, and community.

Because no one carries strength alone.

The Eora Nation is not just part of Sydney’s history — it’s part of its living identity.
This timeline shares moments that shaped The Block and the Redfern Aboriginal community across generations.

But these stories are more than history. They reflect the strength, resilience and enduring connection of the Eora Nation — the Traditional Custodians of the Sydney region — and the communities who continue to shape this place today.

For Mabo Day, we honour the connection Aboriginal people have always held to Country, culture and community.
