OPENING @ 5PM TONIGHT — 𝘉𝘖𝘜𝘕𝘊𝘌𝘉𝘈𝘊𝘒 2026 by Arts in Recovery (AiR) creative participants

For more than 16 years, AiR has provided a welcoming space for people to come together, make art, share experiences, and build connections through creativity.
AiR is entirely volunteer-run, with workshops and exhibition opportunities provided free of charge; proceeds from artwork sales go directly to the artists. Each work offers a glimpse into an individual creative journey and highlights the positive role art can play in wellbeing and recovery.

Opening: Saturday 17th October, 5-7pm
Exhibition runs until October 25th

Arts in Recovery (AiR)

The Creator Incubator is pleased to present Bounceback 2026, an annual exhibition celebrating the creative participants of the Arts in Recovery (AiR) program.
 
For more than 16 years, AiR has provided a welcoming space for people to come together, make art, share experiences, and build connections through creativity. The program continues to bring people from across the community together, creating opportunities for self-expression, learning, and mutual support.
 
The works featured in this exhibition reflect the individuality, imagination, and lived experiences of the participating artists. Each piece offers a glimpse into an individual creative journey and highlights the positive role art can play in wellbeing and recovery.
 
AiR remains entirely volunteer-run, with workshops and exhibition opportunities provided free of charge. Proceeds from artwork sales go directly to the artists.
 
Bounceback 2026 is an opportunity to celebrate creativity, community, and the people who make both possible. We invite you to explore the exhibition, meet the artists, and enjoy the diverse range of works on display.

👀 Last day to see Phil McGrath’s debut exhibition 𝘓𝘶𝘹 𝘌𝘹 𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘢. Do yourself a favour and come in before 5pm to see this illuminating solo show!

Working with everything from vintage blowtorches, hand pumps and bicycle parts to hydraulics, gramophones and domestic objects, McGrath transforms salvaged components into a collection of finely balanced, functional lamps.

Refashioned into sculptural forms, the works bring together the raw practicality of industrial machinery with the character and familiarity of objects once found in workshops, garages and homes.

‘Lux Ex Machina’ celebrates reuse, invention and the pleasure of seeing outdated objects illuminated in an entirely new way.

PRAXIS takes over Newcastle Art Gallery!

PRAXIS presents five new interdisciplinary collaborations, bringing together five Catapult choreographers and five visual artists from The Creator Incubator.

As you journey through Newcastle Art Gallery, you will discover five distinct artistic worlds—each created through the meeting of movement, visual art and shared creative practice.

Collaboration: Zoe Monohan X Bronte Naylor

Zoe Monohan and Bronte Naylor’s PRAXIS collaboration explores the intersection of technology, intimacy and shifting perspectives. Through movement and visual practice, the work considers how technology shapes the ways we see, connect with and understand one another. Bodies, images and viewpoints move between closeness and distance, revealing how perspective can alter our experience of intimacy in an increasingly mediated world.

Presented by Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub and The Creator Incubator, this exciting Newcastle Art Gallery takeover celebrates interdisciplinary experimentation and the extraordinary work emerging from our region.

New Annual 2026

PRAXIS presents five new interdisciplinary collaborations, bringing together five Catapult choreographers and five visual artists from The Creator Incubator. As you journey through Newcastle Art Gallery, you will discover five distinct artistic worlds—each created through the meeting of movement, visual art and shared creative practice.

PRAXIS Collaboration: Kyle Ramboyong and Doug Heslop

Choreographer Kyle Ramboyong and visual artist Doug Heslop come together through PRAXIS to explore the meeting point between movement and visual art.

Responding to the theme of Harmony & Dissonance, their collaboration investigates contrast, connection and the shifting relationship between the body, material and space. Through a shared process of experimentation, Kyle and Doug bring their distinct artistic perspectives into dialogue—creating an immersive world where movement becomes visual and the visual landscape comes alive.

Presented as part of the Newcastle Art Gallery takeover by Catapult Dance Choreographic Hub and The Creator Incubator, PRAXIS invites audiences to encounter new interdisciplinary works throughout the Gallery.

OPENING @ 6PM TONIGHT — 𝘓𝘶𝘹 𝘌𝘹 𝘔𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘢 by Phil McGrath

In his debut exhibition, Lux ex Machina, local artist and self-described tinkerer Philip McGrath (Phil McGrath) gives obsolete and discarded machinery an unexpected second life, transforming the remnants of twentieth-century technology into a striking collection of sculptural balance-arm lamps.
No component is too ordinary to be reconsidered. In McGrath’s hands, forgotten mechanical remnants become both sculpture and functioning objects, illuminating not only the room around them but the ingenuity embedded in the machines of the past.

Opening: Saturday 26th September, 6-8pm
Exhibition runs until October 4th

In his debut exhibition ‘Lux ex Machina,’ tinkerer and local artist Philip McGrath (Phil McGrath) breathes new life (and light) into the lost, obsolete, and derelict machines of the 20th century, weaving the disparate components into a striking collection of sculptural balance-arm lamps.

At a time when objects and technologies are increasingly designed to be replaced rather than repaired, Lux ex Machina asks us to consider the creative potential hidden in our discarded mechanical world.

What was once forgotten isn’t lost forever, and will shine once more.

In his solo exhibition ‘Lux ex Machina,’ local artist and tinkerer Philip McGrath (Phil McGrath) breathes new life (and light) into the lost, obsolete, and derelict machines of the 20th century, weaving the disparate components into distinctly fresh configurations.
Through his singular collection of balance-arm lamps, McGrath deftly combines the rough and raw practicality of industrial technology with the domestic and incidental devices of the previous-century home. Fusing the unapologetically functional with the expressively aesthetic, the ‘Lux ex Machina’ exhibition will further illuminate appreciation of outdated and discarded tools, tech, and mechanisms. What was once forgotten isn’t lost forever, and will shine once more.
