Spencer Harrison: Semi/Permeable continues this week at Project8

Across the exhibition, abstraction acts as a kind of filter or threshold, where forms, colours and perceptions pass through one another. Geometric forms stretch across the walls, fold onto the floor and reappear on freestanding structures.

The exhibition is on view until 20 June.

Inside Spencer Harrison’s studio.

In Harrison’s work, geometric abstraction becomes a way of thinking through the modern world: its design, architecture, technology and the built environment. Colour sits at the centre of this practice, explored through its phenomenology, emotive qualities and sociopolitical meaning.

See Spencer Harrison’s works in Semi/Permeable, on view at Project8 until 20 June.

A walkthrough of Spencer Harrison: Semi/Permeable, curated by Kim Donaldson with Jiayang Zhang.

The spatial arrangement is informed by Japanese garden design, using framing, concealment and partial views to guide movement through the exhibition.

Spencer Harrison: Semi/Permeable continues this week at Project8, Wednesday–Saturday, 11am–5pm.

Drawing on Helen Frankenthaler’s soak-stain technique, these paintings use diluted washes of paint applied directly to canvas. Soft, atmospheric fields are interrupted by precise geometric forms, creating a delicate tension between the natural and the constructed, order and disorder. Across the works, opposing qualities do not resolve so much as press against one another, becoming porous thresholds through which colour, form and perception move.

Spencer Harrison: Semi/Permeable continues this week at Project8, Wednesday–Saturday, 11am–5pm.

SPENCER HARRISON: Semi/Permeable
opens this Friday, 6 -8pm

Semi/Permeable investigates the dynamic space where opposites meet and negotiate; soft with hard, natural with artificial, order with disorder. These liminal spaces emerge not as static borders, but as zones of possibility. Painting, drawing, sculpture and large-scale digital video draw on abstractions from daily life, the built environment and the natural world.

Curated by Kim Donaldson with Jiayang Zhang

Exhibition continues 9 May – 20 June
Artist talk Saturday 9 May, 3–4pm

PROJECT8 PRESENTS: Spencer Harrison
‘Semi/Permeable’

Opening Friday 8 May, 6pm
9 May – 20 June

Semi/Permeable investigates the dynamic space where opposites meet and negotiate: soft with hard, natural with artificial, order with disorder. These liminal spaces emerge not as fixed borders, but as zones of possibility.

Borrowing its title from cellular biology, the exhibition considers abstraction as a filter or threshold through which ideas, forms and perceptions flow.

The works juxtapose crisp lines over wash-stained papers and canvas; rigid structures intersect with organic flows, and precise forms contrast with imperfect natural surfaces. At this porous edge, clarity and ambiguity coexist, allowing new forms and insights to emerge.

An artist talk will be held on Saturday 9 May, 3–4pm.
